Hello
It is second time that I went to NAP in Burgas to get Bulgarian National Health Insurance. First time the woman at the counter said I wasn't entitled to it as long as I have the UK health Insurance. I couldn't understand her (she didn't speak English), so last time I took an interpreter with me. It happened again! Another lady told me that I cannot get insured with NAP until I provide them a document confirming cancellation of my British Health Insurance! I tried to argue that I didn't have any private insurance but she was adamant. Said I need to call my accountant to get that paper. I am at a loss. What to do now?

Healthcare within EU is complicated and based on several things. Your residency, where you work etc. For example are you working here or are you a retiree? If you are a retiree, you need a document from your home country. Similar if you are here on a short-term assignment for work.

Here is a good starting point:

Good morning,

I am from Holland and live already more than 5 years in Bulgaria/Varna.

I am almost 65 years and have a health insurance with the firm: Life Bulstrad Vienna Insurance Group. They have an office in Varna and there I got my life insurance without any problems.
I paid 160 lv for 1 year, extremely cheap and even the Migration office accepted it when my licna karta almost ended and they gave me a new card for 10 years till 2028.
So inform in your village or otherwise here the adress of Bulstrad: 6, Sveta Sofia,1301 Sofia/Bulgaria, e-mail: bullife@bulstradlife.bg.
Have a nice weekend !
Greetings,

Paul

Problem solved.  I need to get S1 NHS form. Silly of me, never bothered to check it before. However, I wonder if it's worth doing it now before Brexit...All can change in March...

Yes it is worth doing, best to get into the system while you can, if you do it after march it might be to late.

The UK Gov website explains it to you HERE
