NIE number - Lliria

Evening All

So, we're in some major need of some help and advice.

My partner and I intend on buying a property in the Lliria area.  As a way to 'try before we buy' we want to rent a property for a year.  Having emailed many agents over the past month, we have finally started to get some responses, most of which have stated we need an NIE number, despite only using the house as a holiday property.

Firstly, we are booked to visit for a week on 24th March, (we were hoping to confirm a rental property while we are there,) so time is of the essence with this

We've been doing some research about ways to obtain this number, and it seems there are various different routes;

There are online services that charge an elevated fee to do it on our behalf, but promise quick turn around, (anywhere between 2-7 days.)  Has anybody used one of these services?  If so, are they worth the money?  Is there a recommended one?

Ive also read that you can do it at most police stations, and many can get it all sorted the same day.  Is this actually true?  I know Spanish can be quite laid back so we really dont want to have a wasted week.

Finally, and perhaps a silly question, but we have a 4 year old son, I assume he wouldnt need one?

Any help and support would be greatly appreciated.  And (if we ever get this sorted,) you would be welcome around for a jug of sangria :)

Thanks

Jon

hi Guys

I have just done this process recently , but not for a child.
You are correct you cant do much in Spain without your NIE numbers.
I followed advice on forums and unfortunately some really helpful people did this process at different times in there move to Spain. So I spent all day being bounced from one office to another eventually i found the offices (not mentioned on any forums) and was told I could not be seen without an appointment. This site was in Spanish and appointments took about 2 weeks. So my advice would be to use a friendly lawyer in Lliria. They dont charge a great deal and it is done on the day that they say.
I actually gave power of attorney to a top lawyer and this was expensive but quick and done.
As said I would use a local lawyer who knows the system.
This office comes highly recommended  Calle de juan Izquierdo, 86 - BJ, Lliria, 46160 , Valencia
Good luck - I will take you up on the sangria

Hi Kevin

Thanks for such a swift response - super helpful.  We were considering just getting a lawyer to do it for us so will take a look at your recommendation.  The last thing we want is to spend the whole week travelling backwards and forwards to various different offices with a 4 year old in tow!  We will keep you posted on how we progress

Next on the list is to find a rental home (MUST have a swimming pool - our son has already laid the law down on that one!)

Whilst you may be told you need an NIE to rent there is no law which says that.   You do if you need to open s bank account thought

If you do need one then you are required to make the application at the national police station where you are living or staying.  To make an appointment you can only do that on line.  At most offices that does take a while.

I  do not know how an agent can do it for you unless of course you have given the power of attorney (a poder).

Morning John

From what I can gather, the lawyer, (or these online services,) basically handle all of the paperwork, (ensuring all is completed correctly,) appointment booking, etc, on our behalf, so all we would need to do is attend the appointment at the specified time to collect the NIE numbers.  Being a non-Spanish speaker, (currently - Im learning,) this is probably something that could be of use to us.  That being said, some of the online services do state that we dont need to attend the appointment, and they will obtain the number on our behalf, (using a notorized power of attorny.)

Are you saying that this seems like a con?

Thanks

Johncar

I was speaking to a gestor last week when I was at the police station,  who said that in Malaga at present she is unable to make an appointment for her clients as malaga has suspended all appointments, and even cancelled those set for after 29th March , Brexit day.

I don’t know if other police stations are similarly affected
