WHY are people messing with the idle speed of motorcycles?

Post new topic

KruChris

Bought my Honda WH-125 T scooter for 4 million while working in Thailand. When I picked it up, the engine would stutter and then stall. Here we go again. Seems either owners or mechanics or both are obsessed with messing with what's an acceptable, normal idle speed.

Hoping to save 0.0003 liters in the coming year, I suppose? (Similar to folks shifting up too quickly or leaving their bikes in 3rd or 4th gear at all times, turning semi-automatics into their personal 'automatics'.

Have you encountered this?

If so, what was the fix? I plan to take the bike to HONDA. (Will they be open on a Sunday)?

Hopefully, they can re-set the EFI but it's scary that anyone would mess with an engine which is running well. But the very same has been encountered on other bikes, hence my strong bias and the refusal to believe in mass 'coincidence'.

It doesn't matter where in South East Asia you are, always use a dealer approved service center.

you don't need to go to a motobike dealer to increase or decrease idle speed.  Usually it is a small screw with a flat head on the carburetor.  If you have fuel injection, it would be similar.  Just get a screw driver and adjust up or down.  but if you are not comfortable, then by all means, take it to a motobike dealer and watch, tell them what idle you like.  Should take 30 seconds or less.  If you have an owners manual, you should take a look and try it yourself, unless your not sure

UPDATE - I just checked the owners manual for Honda 125 scooters, is it possible that you have the idle stop set to idling stop position?  Based on the manual, if it is set to idling stop position, your bike will continue to shut off when you stop after 3 seconds.  Then it will automatically re start when you give it gas.    Not sure if this is your bike, here is the manual I found.
