Firstly, congratulations.

Secondly, your employer will be able to help you out with all the issues that your brought up. Meet them, eat with them. Talk with them. They will help you out.

In the meantime. When you first arrive, stay at a hostel. They can be pretty cheap. I would suggest a shared dorm room. That is the best best way to go. Use the hallway showers, and use that as your HQ until you get settled.

Make friends! China is all about friendships and relationships. You MUST get out and make local friends. Once you do this, everything else will fall into place.

I've been here for about a month and really like it.  It's a medium-sized place with little or no air pollution.  The police are not nearly as maniacal as I've experienced in some other cities and the people are as friendly as anywhere.  As in most cities, it is crammed with Mom and Pop eateries, but there is also a nice, large shopping mall (Huamao Place) where you will find all the stores and restos you can imagine (with all the usual Western chains; McDonalds, KFC, Pizza Hut, etc).  If you are jonesing for some really good Western casual food I would recommend Daiboy on the ground level ... great fire-grilled burgers.  One thing you should also know ... you will be about the only Western person around ... there is a Meten language center in the mall which seems to employ maybe 2 Westerners and the odd school elsewhere that may have one, but you will likely not meet any others.  This doesn't bother me because I like making friends with the locals and other resident teachers.  See you soon, no doubt!
