Need more recommendations on where to settle around Manta!

Where do you live by the ocean?

marcomueses

I live 4 blocks away from the Ocean, but, location is: TONSUPA, Esmeraldas.
If interested, I'll be glad to provide you more info.

I thought I responded. I have a house on the beach south of canoa

I think most Americans and people from Canada are using the excuse of bad health making them leave the area that you are asking about. When it really is all about earthquakes. Everything is really hard to sell in that area to expats since 2016. I think most are going to Mexico now it is booming there. I was in both places last year. Ecuador was very nice just outside of Manta going south on the beaches. Canoa area also is nice but earthquakes are more prone. They had a few mild ones when I was there. I just don't like them at all and couldn't stop wondering if my house would fall on me one day. Life is to short for that and a beach.

Bigbrad2008

Are the earthquakes more common there than San Francisco?

Haven’t you heard? California is perfect for retirement due to low cost of living and zero earthquakes in the region. lol 😬😜🤡

fiege1224

I think so. But the big difference is the building codes in Ecuador are cheap and crappy and poorly inforced. Where Ca. has much better building codes for earthquakes. When you compare those two it is like comparing a Ford Pinto to a Rolls. Ecuador seems to have big quakes about every 16 to 20 years in this area with small ones in between all the time. It is the ring of fire. I love the area but by the time you buy something built well enough it cost as much as other beach areas without the quakes. Once you have a quake like 2016 you then can't give your home away for years to come. If you just rent no problem as long as it doesn't fall down on you while you live in it. Every beach has its problems but most problems you get warnings in time to move away but not with earthquakes. Just my opinion. I still like the areas a lot and would visit again.

Love that song but he is dead. Don't want to join him just yet.

No one can predict the tremblors nor their strength. It should not be a factor not to consider living by the Ocean.
I lived through the strong earthquakes, luckily, my place is a bungalow, thus, it did not suffer structural damages.
Climate, tranquility, relaxation, affordability etc. should be the main reasons to chose your ideal place.

How are you defining "around Manta", because some of the responses I am seeing don't seem to mesh with my interpretation of your question?

LasOlas1

Hello, There is a community north of Manta called Las Olas. I am helping people to understand the offering. If you would like more information please contact me at ***. I look forward to hearing from you.

Norwegian Cruise Lines ships used to stop in Manta on their way to Chile, but not this year or next.  Wonder why.

fiege1224

They base it on demand and overall cost to bring it to market and make a profit. I have cruised a lot all over. My last long one wasn't going to be done again due to the ship only filling 80% so they were going to change locations for better return. When my ship didn't fill they were already losing a lot of money before they even left the dock. It made for a very nice cruise for me ship only had 900 people on it and it held 1250. 30 years ago I was on one ship that only had 300 people on it and it could hold 1,000 people it went broke 3 months later.

Norwegian Cruise Line is still sailing once a year from Miami to Chile in the fall and back again in the spring.  What changed is that they do not stop in Manta.  The ship holds 2,000, smallest one in the fleet.

fiege1224

Maybe safety or government Bs on costs? Maybe it wasn't making enough for the cruise line when they did stop.

Bigbrad2008

Maybe they were scared of tidal wave a from the earthquakes.  Or a sharknado

Last time I went thru Manta it was kinda depressing what with all the incredible earthquake related damages......They were workin on the roads and infrastructure but 2 yrs after the big one, it was still largely demolished. Im sure this would be taken into account by the Cruise Line officials.........

gpjr

No. I have lived here for 7 years and only felt 2 that were centered 40 - 50 miles away.

The bottom line is this:  Based on posts in past years on this forum .. and a recent post from a Las Olas project promoter acknowledging that they were still in the earth-moving stage .. Las Olas has been a money pit for various Expats for a decade.

La República banned casinos six years ago, but nobody's been able to take the gamble out of pre-construction projects in South America.

San Francisco is waiting for the big one. Actually most of California

Captain Obvious.

As long as you gamble with your own money, what's the problem?

If you gamble with other people's money like, say, politicians do, that's another story...

Bigbrad2008

Gambling is stupid but people can be stupid if they want

dumluk

Lifes a gamble right from the get go.........

Bigbrad2008

True, but still stupid to take gambles where risk out weigh reward.

dumluk

The higher the risk, the higher the reward........si o no?

Bigbrad2008

No lol
