Hello everyone,

Having a disability should not be a barrier to living abroad. While the intricacies of one’s move to Kuwait may be specific to the individual, certain steps can be undertaken to make the process smoother.

What are the important aspects you would personally keep in mind during the planning phase (social security benefits, ongoing medical treatment, etc.)?

Are you required to go through a medical check-up before your move?

Are there any organisations or groups who lend support to expatriates who have a disability?

What are your thoughts on the infrastructure in Kuwait (public spaces, transportation and buildings)?

Are there enough opportunities to make the most of your social life in Kuwait? Are leisure activities made accessible to people with disabilities?

Please do share your experience with us.

You do not describe the disability but I assume it is a mobility limitation.  Kuwait is going to be a real grind for you or your loved one.  Most buildings have very limited parking and seldom formal lot with handicap section near the door.  Often there is no parking at all and people park up on curbs and sidewalk or construction areas and climb over stuff with their 4wd jeeps and suvs.  Also, only the most upscale malls and public buildings have wheelchair ramps, large elevators,  - sometimes only escalators with no elevators, etc.

If it's not a simple mobility issue but an illness make sure to check and see in advance that the (yes REQUIRED) expat physical won't disqualify you.  I spent 4 years working as an expat in oil and gas drilling and nearly didn't make it here because my wife had showed a spot on her lung on the X-ray and they wanted to disqualify her based on possible TB or Pnemonia.   It was actually scar tissue from the removal of a benign tumor but we had to jump through hoops obtaining medical records from the original surgery and having them be reviewed by a skeptical Q8i medical board.

Hello,

I am a person with a disability and use two prosthetic legs: my right leg is amputated above the knee, and my left leg below the knee. I walk without a cane, and most people don’t even realize I have a disability. I also ride a bicycle and motorcycle without any assistive devices and drive independently. Additionally, I am an athlete who competes in air pistol shooting while standing. I can swim for 45 minutes non-stop and am very interested in learning archery and solo kayaking. I am a retired government employee from Iran.

I am seeking a country that would appreciate my talents and help me contribute to the development and empowerment of its disabled community, allowing me to raise its flag on the world stage. Could you kindly guide me on how to get assistance from the organizations and groups you mentioned in relation to immigration to the esteemed nation of Kuwait?

I eagerly await your response.

Sincerely,

Reza Jahanbakhsh
