Hello everyone,

Reaching the decision to seek divorce can be hard. Filing the papers as an expat in Malta can be as taxing since a good grasp of legislations is needed and the process can prove to be tedious.

Where and how do you apply for a divorce in Malta? How long does it take for the process to be completed?

If the couple has children, which measures can be taken in order to protect their interests?

Which procedures should be completed so that the divorce is legally recognized in the country of origin?

How is divorce viewed in Malta?

Being away from one's home country and loved ones, what advice do have for staying strong emotionally and mentally in this situation?

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Divorce is not an official topic in this country. Up to two years ago divorce was illegal. Now divorce is allowed, but people who divorce are the outcast of society.
Therefore for any foreign couple to get divorced it is always the best to go back to their country of origin and finalize divorce over there.
Divorce is a shame in Malta, because the vast majority of Maltese people are roman catholics and this religion does not approve divorce.

It's been a lot longer than 2 years! Nearly 10 in fact.

It's not a big deal, sure maltese divorcing is an issue, in general they dont care what expats do.

Sorry, but I beg to disagree.  Divorce is now fully accepted in Malta and divorcees are no longer viewed as outcasts. As a Maltese (and personally and in principle against divorce) I can assure you that it no longer carries any social stigma.
