Payment methods in Australia

Post new topic

Priscilla

Hello everyone,

Once you’re settled in Australia, you will need to make some basic purchases, like groceries or pay bills. Hence, it is essential to know the payment methods available in your host country.

Which are the most common payment methods in Australia? Why would you prefer some forms over others?

Does the amount of money or the type of paid services (groceries, bills, rent, etc.) determine the choice of payment methods?

Are there any apps at your disposal which make the payment process easier in Australia?

Can certain foreign currencies be used to make payments?

Have your habits in terms of payment methods changed since moving to Australia?

Thanks for sharing your experience,

Priscilla

Hi,
Nearly all payments in Australia for retail purchases are now made by either debit card or credit card. Most establishments still take cash, though. For large bills such as electricity, water, rates etc, people normally pay by electronic system. A few businesses still pay by cheque. Employees almost invariably have their wages/salaries credited directly to their bank accounts. Foreign currency is almost never accepted but can be changed easily at a bank or bureau de change. Payment in cash is looked upon with suspicion these days as it is often associated with tax evasion. Credit/debit card payment and electronic transfer is a much more convenient way to pay.
