Welcome to the forum!

Carmen Mendoza?   Calle Carmen Mendoza in Santo Domingo?

How did you end up deciding on that area?

Have you run a restaurant?

Have you visited the DR before?

planner

Welcome.to the forums.  How about opening a thread and then you can ask all your questions and get a good variety of responses.

Carmen Mendoza, at the beginning I though it was a town in DR I didn't know. Yes, it's a street in Santo Domingo, specifically in the Bella Vista or Ensanche Quisqueya, depending where it's exactly located. Bella Vista it's a better location than Ensanche Quisqueya.
What kind of restaurant you are planning to open?
Depending on the location, real state tend to be incredibly high in Santo Domingo.
Do a lot of research regarding this. It's reaaaally important aside of other issues.

hello
nice to meet you.
I have family there, that's how I came about choosing that spot.
and yes, I am currently head chef at a restaurant here in the states located on the jersey shore, been a chef for 7 years now.

about visiting DR, I had plans for may, was going to spend 2 weeks, looking around and gettin somewhat of an idea of culture and people, but COVID happened, so now waiting.

thank you for replying  :)

taina_aah

Hello,
I just registered with the Las Terrenas forum and am looking forward getting feedback and
opinions on various topics from those with experience in living there.

My wife and I visited this past February and are planning on staying for 6 months a year once we retire next year.

We did see some properties during our visit and are currently looking at other opportunities to check out once the country opens for tourism again.

Nice to be on board.

Welcome to the forums!  Make sure to review the other threads too, lots of important info on here!

Hello everyone!  My husband and I are in the (somewhat) early stages of planning for retirement at the end of next year.  We've 99% decided on retiring international and are deciding between a few different areas right now.  DR (Puerto Plata and Sosua are high on our lists right now).  We currently live in Panama City, Florida in the US and are carefully researching what will need to be done in order to become an ex-pat.  We are planning to vacation in the area in September to get a feel for it and help to make our decision.  We will be purchasing (I think anyway LOL) a home or condo/apt on or close to the beach.  I'm Lee Ann and my husband is Tommy.  I am retired from being an executive recruiter and my Tommy is a project manager/consultant in the Commercial Construction industry.

Hello Everyone from Central Florida.  We're in the process of purchasing an apartment at Punta Cana as an investment.  Our plan is to travel back and forth between Orlando, Tampa. Puerto Rico and Punta Cana.  We would love to meet other expats and hear their experiences in DR, especially in the Bavaro/Punta Cana area as we're seriously considering it as a retirement option.

planner

Welcome to the forums!   We will have to  schedule a meet up in Punta Cana then!

Lots of helpful info on here - have a look around.  Feel free to start a thread if you do not find what you are looking for too!

Hey everyone!

I'm Dominican but was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. Growing up I would stay in DR for months at a time. Even though I have some pretty good knowledge on how things work there I joined this site and constantly go through the forums because there's a lot of very helpful information for me. I plan on moving to DR in a couple of years but want to get some things taken care of ASAP just to get them over with. I am looking to move into both Constanza and Las Terrenas. I'm pretty tired of NYC lol. I'm looking for advice real estate, tax laws and business laws among other things.

Good morning everyone;

My girlfriend and I are planning to come and live in the DR for a year or so - arriving on or around April 1st.  We currently live in Florida and are planning on retiring to the DR for a year or so.

We are looking to get lots of help with things like getting our temporary residency visas, setting up bank accounts, cell phone providers, buying a car and all other things that will help us in our move and stay.

So all suggestions, advice and help is appreciated.

planner

Welcome to the forums!   I see you have found a couple of good threads to get help.  Ask questions in the threads or open one yourself if you cannot find what you are looking for!

Hey everyone! The wife and I are starting to look at the Dominican Republic as a possible place to relocate from the United States. The process looks daunting, so I look forward to reading and learning a lot from this website and it's resources.

Hope everyone is having a great week!

Hi,

I've been enjoying reading y'all's conversations here, and think it's about time I come out and introduce myself. (excuse the y'all's, I've been living in North Carolina too long!)

I lived in the DR for 3 years in the 90's, fresh out of college.  I taught at a small English-speaking school in the beautiful mountains of Jarabacoa.  It was a wonderful experience, overall, as I learned to adapt to the new culture, learn basic Spanish, and fell so in love with the DR that I hated to leave!  But my job wasn't paying off my student loans, so I went back to the U.S. to get a "real job" as a public school teacher.  I did return to the DR once, for my honeymoon.  Spent the week partly in Sosua, also Jarabacoa and a quick trip to Samana, typical tourist style.

I've always dreamed of going back to the DR to live; unfortunately my husband never felt the same way.   While I'm still keeping my options open for living overseas in my empty nest / retirement years, I am also getting closer to another short visit, hopefully within this coming year of 2021. Either with friends or alone, not sure yet.

My favorite areas of the DR have been the beaches, I have to admit.  Not so much for laying in the sun but I love all water sports, especially snorkeling, boogie boarding and paddle boarding.  I also love to dance; I'll have to ask Planner about her favorite dance spots, when I come down!  Definitely learned to merengue years ago, love all dance styles!  Also loved the beautiful mountains of Jarabacoa.  Nothing like seeing the clouds over the valley in the morning, the hikes through pine and palm tree forests, hidden waterfalls, and also had the great experience of hiking Pico Duarte, twice!

Anyway, I"m really enjoying all your chats here, and hope to contribute more as I get closer to making another trip there a reality.  For now, I would welcome any suggestions for great beaches to visit that are somewhat quiet, with a more local vibe, with calm waters that are great for snorkeling right from the shore, (like Sosua but maybe less crazy??!)  and are there places that rent paddleboards in certain places? Not interested in pricey snorkle/dive tours, just want to live cheaply in AirBnb's, buy my own groceries and cook, ride guagas and moto conchos, enjoy 2 weeks of sunshine,  ocean and local culture.

Thanks for your helpful info here!
Jennifer
