what are the first things an expat must do to settle into his new home for a year.  I have both American an Australian  citizenship. background is hospitality and tourism but a niche for wine.  also have teaching certificates to tech English. looking at starting out in HCMC an then maybe to Dalat. any suggestions for starters would be great.

Visa is important - currently easy to get a 3 month tourist visa, though the rules are due to change in the coming months.

To work here legally, you need a work permit - to gain that you will need to have your teaching certificates and DEGREE certified / legalised.   Those of the two most challenging items to tackle first

Good pointers.

To clarify, any work permit is actually obtained by the employer.

It is, in essence, the employer's permit to hire that person.

Some new arrivals think they can get a work permit and then find a job.

The reverse is true.

You can also get a WP if you can show 5-years of documented proof in that field.

Hepatitis and tetanus is all shots you need. Get qualified to drive a motorcycle, then you can transfer your drivers license here easily. Apt leases usually for a year, but so many available that shorter leases available at higher cost. Just rent a two star hotel from agoda.com for a month until you find a neighborhood near your job that suits you. Long commutes can be brutal. Motorbike rentals are about US$60 a month. Find facebook groups with combinations of 'vietnam' or 'hcmc' and 'expat' and 'teaching' in the name.
