My sister was getting a PCR test every week for her job. She works part-time in an old folks home answering phones.
She cares 4 hours per week for a 100 year old women in the ladies home.
She had her 2 doses of Moderna and so far feels fine.
She is 73 years old but seems much younger even with a hip replacement and a rebuilt ankle( too much karate over the years and falling of her motorbike)
I suppose since my husband is 73 and I am 66 we could inlist in getting a vax. For now, we have no plans on traveling anywhere and I'm not interested in taking any vax unless I am basically forced to do normal things in public.
My sister gets flu shots all the time as well, I haven't had one since 1998 and only had that one jab. Was free at my casino job for myself and my husband and they had nurses come to my job so it was super easy to do.
I know sooner or later we all will need a vax or we won't be allowed out of our cages/homes.
There's a news article describing traffic on the Ukranian border coming to HU for the vaccine. It might just be anti-government propaganda.
Read it here in Hungarian. Stick it in Google Translate if needed.
Most interesting note the statement regarding the costs:
...The politician knows that there are very few vaccines in Ukraine, but anyone who wants to can buy a vaccine, albeit at a price. As he said, currently the two vaccinations are 50K UAH, so converting 540K HUF per person. He added: In Hungary, however, they receive it for free.
If this is true (needs triangulation), it's insane. I cannot believe people would be paying almost 2K USD (540K HUF) for the vaccine privately in Ukraine. That's absolute price gouging. It costs nothing like that!
Think it is Astrazeneca which is giving some people blod clots.
I knew it was going to take a bit of time before side effects showed up.
I am holding out to the end, no matter if it is free or not.
I would only take one if it allowed for travel, think some are not approved to travel with, not sure which are good and other not.
I wouldn't pay $2,000 for any drug...Well I'm not a rock star... they used to fly in private jets just to bring their drug dealers to them.

I read this morning it was two people in Austria who had blood clots but there's no evidence it was something to do with the AZ vaccination. Even the EMA says that there's no evidence. Someone on the radio said statistically the number of blood clots now is lower than in general times. It's an insignificant number of people compared to the millions who have no side effects.
I think much of this is political against the AZ vaccine because AZ is having difficulty supplying enough doses.
I'm complaining here quite a lot about the HU vaccine rollout but imagine how bad it must be in UA if people are prepared to pay out big to skirt the system. I suppose Ukrainians won't take anything from Russia so their choices are more limited.
All my family back in the UK have gad it and are all fine. I know a lot of others also had it without any problems.

Looks like many people will not believe this is real unless they get ill themselves.
I was one with that view but now, who knows.
I think there is something happening, maybe those with weak systems are getting ill and some could be carriers.
In general we never have enjoyed being in large crowds.
Me for sure.
I get nervous when I'm stuck around too many people.
I get weirded out when the grocery shop is too busy.
Our neighbor called this morning. She chats with my hubby maybe once a week for an hour or so.
She is a nervous wreck.
All alone now since her mm passed this last year.
She had wanted to sell her flat and move closer to sme fmaily here.
With the lockdowns she has changed her plans.
Not a great time to sell, why invite people inside to get you ill?
I am looking forward to things going back to something more like normal. Doubt the old normal will ever return again.
I want to get my eye surgery done with and perhpas take a nice trip outside of Hungary.
Tired of being a one eyed one horned flying purple people eater. Seeing double out of one eye makes me feel off and I can't get glasses until my bad eye is dealt with. Hate living on hold.

Not such a big surprise. I take the dog walking every other day and quite often when I arrive at parking place next to the forest, there's hardly anywhere to park. It's all mobbed. I've had to start going early and even then when I'm in the jungle, I see lots of people - most unmasked. With everything closed, all people can do is go walking in the forest. We're starting to look for less popular places now but it's a negative for the dog who likes meeting new sniffable friends.

I was wondering if it was a muddle, then a kerfuffle but it's worse than that. It's definitely a mess now. I don't think this will be resolved until the end of the year.
It's now impacting my ability to get to one of my jobs. I will have to jump through hoops to get there with multiple PCR tests going in and out. It's being insisted that I fly to the location, spend 14 days in quarantine and have Zoom calls with the others who are all down the road in another building. As someone in the loop seems to have failed to notice or appreciate, I can Zoom call them from here just as well.
Just a general rant on today's news, this blood clot thing is just becoming ridiculous. Expert on the radio today said the number of broken legs is higher than the number of blood clot incidences. No-one is saying vaccinations cause broken legs because yes, that would be dumb.
Now, even the EMA cannot agree with the national authorities. So much for cohesion.
I reckon this has all gone semi-nuclear and political. In particular, Macron has completely lost his marbles sowing doubt on the AZ vaccine on multiple occasions and accusing the UK of not exporting vaccines. It almost seems like the EU countries are falling out with each other over COVID19 measures, the vaccine and Brexit. And Macron is always there as the biggest stirrer of them all.
It must be him preparing for the 2022 presidential election casting Oxford-AZ as the enemy.
End Rant!
Well that doesn't sound too great. I hope they cancel the stupid must go to trip and just allow a zoom meeting from home.
What a waste of time and energy plus the stress of being locked up for 2 weeks for nada.
They seem to wish to break people's spirits.
Maybe you can."call in sick"!
I saw a dude walking on the sidewalk today wearing his mask on his forehead, not under his chin. Wow, that is a new one on me.

Nah, can't call in sick for weeks on end. If only....utter waste of time. But that's some bureaucrat for you. I'm appealing to someone there who may have common sense to lobby the incompetents in charge.
In other news: EU vaccine passports plans published. Big brother is watching you big time.
Maybe the guy with the mask on his head didn't want anyone to know he's a cyclops.

Too bad.
I know sooner or later it is going to be required to have a vax to even go food shopping.
Afriad the rest of our lives are going to have so many insane rules and regualtions that life will never resemble what it used to be.
No worries, we will die out and the younger people will have no clue how life used to be...
Well, that would be dumb to make you fy somewhere and lock down for weeks only to do a zoom meeting.
I personally do feel like a cyclops ATM.
Still feel ripped off about fixing my eye.
One eye is great the other blurry with double vision. Can't get glasses either until it is fixed.
207 people passed yesterday in Hungary from C-19.
What a horror story about that women on a ventilator who was stabbed to death by that nut case.
Need more guards watching but then again that would not be great either.
I asked Santa for a time machine so many times, would be great to go back to the 80's.

I had to Google that story on the stabbing murder of the ventilated patient:
Woman on Ventilator Stabbed
Reading that article, and not to make light of the incident, one has to wonder about the last words in the news item: "The mental condition of the suspect is being examined, he said. The prosecutor cited the risk of escape and a possible repeat offence as the reason for his detention." . Really? No kidding!

I see some countries are saying if a country has sufficient persons vaccinated, the borders will be open again. See here re: Greece.
Haris Theoharis [Tourism Minister] told the IBT Berlin tourism fair, the world’s largest, that Greece would after this date welcome anyone who had been vaccinated, had antibodies or had tested negative for coronavirus.
I am hoping that this will become a trend with "open" being two ends of a plane journey between two high vaccinated rate countries - oddly, this could be the UK and Hungary, even if it's the Chinese vaccine here.
Do you really want to go back to the 80s? I'd be OK to be my age then now but all my experience I have right now plus a book with all the future lottery numbers and winners of the horse races. Downside is platform shoes, kipper ties, mullet hair and flared trousers. 60s would be more groovy. BTW, see the movie Hot Tub Time Machine - ludicrous of course but actually not bad at all and quite funny in places.
As received:
Hungary: Nationwide coronavirus-related restrictions extended until further notice
As of 19 March 2021 nationwide coronavirus-related restrictions have been extended until further notice.
Under the restrictions, all nonessential businesses are closed, masks are mandatory in public spaces and there is a nightly curfew from 20:00 – 05:00 local time (19:00 – 04:00 GMT).
The government has indicated it will reevaluate the restrictions when it reaches its goal of vaccinating 2.5 million individuals, 1.5 million of which have already been vaccinated.
Today a very bad day as far as infections are concerned, Thursday historically (to my knowledge was always the day of the week with the highest measurement). For yesterday (Friday) it was even higher 11.132 new infections, I personally expect death toll to rise to 400/500 per day shortly.
Good luck to al, please stay careful and healthy.

Germany is reporting exponential growth of infections. It can only be the same here. Poland looks bad too. The rate of rollout here seems far too slow to me.
UK is vaccinating 1% of the population per day yet in mainland Europe it's way below that. Hungary is doing better than some.
That silly nonsense about blood clots and the AZ vaccine is just such fake news. The incidence of blood clots is way below the norm and more lives will be lost from not using it.
I do not know if the rumours on Astra are true or not, I am willing to take the "risk", still I prefer Pfizer, Moderna and Sputnik (I would probably not say no to Astra (even if my family has a tendency towards trombose).
I hope that my wife and me get called upon before Easter.

Statistically, it's obviously nonsense about the AZ vaccine. The incidence is so low as to be insignificant.
It seems to be being stirred up mainly by Macron who needs to improve his changes in next year's election. AZ gets a lot of bad press because of Brexit as well, even though it's manufactured in Belgium and in India and freely shared elsewhere with places like Bangladesh. Motivation for running it down is just weird - politics in pandemic. Who would have thought that would be a thing.
It's quite bad to see that foreigners will not be called before Hungarians. Not done on risk but nationality. Personally I am not even thinking I'd be called before August at the earliest.
Costs of vaccines are really significant (the prices below are from Dec 2020 but seem about right). Johnson and Johnson looks promising - low price, single jab and easy handling.
I've just been informed that there will be 8 million doses of the vaccine by June available in Austria.
SimCityAT wrote:I've just been informed that there will be 8 million doses of the vaccine by June available in Austria.
But which one?
Me and my wife have registered, perhaps we are naive, but I hope and expect our first jab will arrive before Easter (hopefully not the one from China, but for the rest it is acceptable).

Good question, I'm not sure they even know lol
cdw057 wrote:Me and my wife have registered, perhaps we are naive, but I hope and expect our first jab will arrive before Easter (hopefully not the one from China, but for the rest it is acceptable).
My MIL is 74 with conditions and she hasn't even had it. She's only slightly more risky than me.
We're both in the register but the chances of being called is probably zero until August or later even though I have much higher risks due to existing conditions.
Government already said foreigners are after Hungarians. And the rollout is really going at snails pace.
I think I've got more chance of getting it on my travels by going to another country other than Hungary and not including the UK.
We just heard from a neighbour 71, she had her first jab and is due for 2nd mid April (I must admit I do not know which one), what was convenient without big waiting lines. She is German (admittedly with Hungarian origins). Bottom line I think things are moving,

If she's got Hungarian citizenship, she'll be higher up the list than if she was German only.
I think the opposite. I think things are moving incredibly slowly. I have no confidence of anything being workable before the end of the summer.
Government said 2.5M persons would be a point where lockdown would end. So far 1.5M have been vaccinated So another 1M to go. The number of vaccinations per day here in HU is about 60,000. So another million would take at least 16 days at the same rate - so easily into April before lockdown ends.
Herd immunity is supposed to kick in at 60% so possibly they need to reach 6M, so another 4.5M to go.
At the same rate it would take 48 days or about 2 months to reach 60%. End of May approximately.
To get to 90% of population, then at least the same time, end of July for foreigners for 1st jab. As there needs to be a 2 jab regime, then it will mean everyone going around again.
IMHO, it will go until September, October or even end of the year to cover everyone if production continues to have problems.
This is becoming hysterical. They've all lost their marbles.
Von der Leyen threatens AstraZeneca with vaccine export ban
As of this morning, this is supported by France and Germany who are reported as having 7M doses of AZ in storage unused. Probably all this is diversionary to stop their politicians getting the blame for messing it up and the EU is going along with it.
The proposed export ban is aimed squarely at the UK (700K+ vaccinations yesterday) but one has to wonder what the UK will do to retaliate - if anything. They have alternatives in Moderna and domestic manufacturing.
France banned the AZ vaccine for over 65s a few weeks ago and now says it can be used for those over 55. WTF is going on?
Hi everyone,
I am living in Budapest as a non-EU citizen (American), here on a residency permit with my Hungarian wife. I do not have a TAJ number. We are hoping to get vaccinated with something that has been approved in EU and the US. However, since I do not have a TAJ, it is my understanding that I cannot reserve shots through the official government website.
We went another route instead, which was recommended to us, but I saw this article today and now wonder what my options are: https://dailynewshungary.com/hungarian- … than-e100/
Anyone have any ideas? Seems like shots are not available through private practice any time soon. Thanks for any advice!
How long have you been living in Hungary?
After a full year as the spouce of a HU citizen you can apply for your Taj card.
Cost is 8,000 per month per person.
Yes, I too would like to know what jab is good for the EU and the US plus SE Asia.
I am sorry, don't know what route you can take if a private doc can't help you out.
I'm sure sooner of later after HU citizens are all jabbed they will allow private doctors some doses.
Yesterday while out most everyone was wearing a mask on the st.
Today I noticed while exercising up on my machine that hardly anyone, well, 50-50% were mask free on the sidewalk.
A couple was jogging without wearing masks while the day before I saw a guy jogging while wearing one.
It's just too much at times.
I don't know if they do a thing but I also don't want a ticket for not wearing one in public.
Just an idea, maybe if your wife speaks with her GP they can work something out to get you a jab when she gets hers?

Thanks for that info, I had not heard that I might be eligible for a Taj card after one year! I have been here longer than that. Interesting that no one my wife has spoken to has mentioned that. :-/
My wife did ask her GP about getting me a jab through them, but it seemed to be a risky topic and they were quick to change the subject. In any case they did not have any vaccine nor any idea when they might get it.
The vaccine we are hoping for is Moderna, second choice would be Pfizer. Would prefer Johnson & Johnson but it might be many months before anyone in Hungary sees that one.

The government controls all supplies of COVID19 vaccines and these are not available in the private sector. I've only heard of one country intending to make them available privately and that's Bangladesh.
The government has said previously that everyone regardless of status in Hungary will get a vaccine for free but that Hungarians will be vaccinated first. That seems to be the case even if one had a TAJ card.
Unless someone knows otherwise, I don't think any foreigner with or without a TAJ card has been vaccinated here. Just not on their radar. The most likely vaccine to be used would be the Chinese one.
There might be a way to slip under the radar by giving a doctor a tip but one might find it hard to actually get some sort of official certificate. Looks to me like options are limited.

It is your right and your wives right for you to be registered after one year in Hungary as a legal resident with immigration to get a Taj card.
I do not know the exact address, somewhere in the 13th district. We went in and they signed me up and my card was mailed to our flat.
As a 3rd country citizen ( me too from the US) the first year in HU as a resident you needed private health coverage but after that full year you should be in the Taj system but you have to ask for it.
Cost is 8,000 per month.
In Hungary we have found if you don't push for your rights then no one will inform you about them.
Probaby now due to C-19 the offices may be closed but have your wife check online. Good luck.

The TAJ card is a tricky subject. Access to it depends on where you are from - EU, no-EU but still European, EEA or anyone else. And then it depends who you are with and if you are a dependent.
But it's very true here that they don't suggest anything. Or provide you any information to help you. It's pretty pathetic. I always think in the first round they want you go away. Throwing up barriers and paperwork requirements here and there. In my opinion, not accepting that first go away signal is crucial. One has to be persistent in asking questions and clarifications and not letting the conversation wither out. It's almost a war of patient attrition to wear them down. In the end they might just give in if they think it'll cause them more work.
The place where one used to see this all the time was at the Post Office. It was way back when. Because no-one believes official information, they have to ask the same questions again and again in different ways to get confirmation and reconfirmation of what the real answer might be.
I just read the below, I suspect there will be even stricter rules shortly

Interesting they said that they are running out of doctors and nurses. A few days ago, O1G said something like doctors are "lackeys". I cannot find a reference to it but basically saying that they were just low level workers in a very insulting way. I read somewhere that over 5000 doctors wanted to or already had left the country last year. Insulting people is not the way to get their cooperation.
cdw057 wrote:https://hungarytoday.hu/coronavirus-hungary-third-wave-medical-chamber-restrictions/
That's totally at odds with the O1G line.
The deaths per 100 population are really high here.
That's despite the Chinese vaccine and the rollout.
fluffy2560 wrote:That's totally at odds with the O1G line.
I had to look up "O1G"... LOL. My education continues.
I've tried to stay cool through this whole cluster, but it's alarming now. Hungary seemed to be sitting pretty with the virus for a long time, but that feels like forever ago. It's a shame it's devolved to this. I will look into my Taj eligibility as soon as I can. But as someone noted, not sure that will help me with getting access to a vaccine any time soon since I'm not Hungarian.

O1G has been used quite a lot. There's a Putin one as well which is popular in Belarus. I think that very vocal Dutch Guy person in the EU parliament mainstreamed O1G.
The rules on the TAJ card are very tricky. I'm a former (because of Brexit) EU national. There are some real knock on effects which the UK Withdrawal Agreement never took into account. But not your situation.
If your other half is working and you are not, there's a possibility of you being her dependent and therefore entitled to the TAJ card in that way. You need to fill in the right forms. The money (8000 HUF a month) is paid via NAV (the tax office). If you have some kids, they are covered under your wife's cover and anyway while they are in full time education.
I asked my local doctor about the vaccine and was told a flat and absolute "NO". The answer was inane - contact your Embassy. It's very silly answer - either policy or just ignorance. British Embassies have a reputation for being unhelpful. I think there's actually no policy they would wish to directly state about EU nationals or third country nationals. I might get Mrs Fluffy to ask our MP to find out. I doubt there will be a coherent answer.
I wish someone on these forums would post verifiably they are NOT a Hungarian national (or dual national with HU paperwork) and they have had the vaccine. I doubt any foreigner has had it regardless of vulnerability or susceptibility.
fluffy2560 wrote:I wish someone on these forums would post verifiably they are NOT a Hungarian national (or dual national with HU paperwork) and they have had the vaccine. I doubt any foreigner has had it regardless of vulnerability or susceptibility.
I checked and it appears the US is taking a completely different approach with regards to non-citizens who find themselves in the US during this time, including undocumented immigrants, and that this is because it is seen as a “moral and public health imperative” to do so. The policy is one of "equal access", to the point of offering it safely even to those who might otherwise be entitled to little more than deportation. That feels right to me, though I can imagine a few of my compatriots will disagree.
