Hello everybody,

new here and looking for information, warnings etc
I have been browsing bulgaria properties for a while and a house with decent large garden cought my eye, it is near Altimir area.
I have never been to Bulgaria;) so why here?
I am looking for an "escape home", I am in need of a spacious house and desire land/garden/animals.
I would choose not to get into mortgage and live as free and independent as possible.
Bulgaria would offer this for the smallest financial risk.
I actually like the design of these old rural houses and with some renovation can make great homes.
Now the catch...
I have been reading your stories here and my "dreamy story" in my mind caught some fear emotion...
Can I live alone with a child in a rural setting?
Can I find reliable workers to help with renovation?
What if if the house gets robbed?

It's a situation and reality we don't really need to think of here in Belgium...
The property has additional buildings so I was thinking to rent it out to someone full time in exchange they keep an eye on the place because it wouldn't be a full time living accomodation.
Or have some workaway volunteers around?

I am already thinking in my head the possibilities with this house, renovate, put some nice ikea/local furniture in and live in the calm and green area.

So who will burst my bubble first;)
Am I being too naive?
And is there anyone from this area who can share some info?
A google map search showed that street looked quite "deserted"...
I am quite to myself but of course safety is crucial!

Thank you so much

Hello,
i think the answer is yes to all besides if you are too naive. Me being from the north east part, the west is obscure to me.
There is even a movie you might have seen
https://www.altimirfilm.com/  .
Bulgaria can be very welcoming in all its four corners and around the mountains too. It depends on want you would like and your budget to a certain point but not much.
If for kind of holiday and nor permanent living wouldn't you like to be closer to sea or mountain and some more scenery?
Regards, Radoslav

Thank you for your reply.
It's hard to say exactly what without seeing surroundings.
It does look like a very poor area. I saw some articles about older british people who settled in that area  so it can't be all deserted ;)
But this part doesn't look lush and green.
I do like the beach but it's on the other side.
It's all such a long drive from the airport and sofia airport has a wide range of cheap european connections.
So that's also an important point.

little traction here it seems...

I would personally visit the country first, get the feel of the place.

Hi, why would you want to move to Bulgaria if you have never been ?. I have never been to but the reviews I have read and the feedback from other expats who live there are good. I am going to go over for possibly a month and see if i like it and will buy a place if I see it as a good investment . I like the idea of Bulgaria as it's a lot cheaper than England.

Sorry for the lack of interaction, me being a new member, i ddin't have my notification setting properly set.
The area is actually the poorest region of the european union. We have a word game here, Западна България means Western Bulgaria and Западна(ла) България means Bulgaria in decline. And if there is a smoke, there is a fire.
The first beach is 3 hours straight drive from Sofia, and there is a lot of lush greenery, much closer, on every side.
Let me know if i can help any other way,
Regards,
Radoslav

Looking at videos and photos is deceiving. You need to visit for an extended period.
