You do need health insurance. I would check with the university as to discounts through them.

If the university can claim you as their employee, you do have discounts with certain health insurance providers that cover the "convenio." Your costs would depend of your ages (members of the family).
That will take a big chunk out of your salary. Health insurance in Brazil is not cheap.

How old are you and your wife? I´m not sure if Brazil requires an insurance in your case. I would advise
a health insurance anyway especially that you have a child so young... There´s SUS the govt health
system but it´s always overcrowded and staying online for consultation can kill you.

Around R$600-R$1,000 to cover both of you depending on which company. You should shop when you come to Brazil.
