to rent on airbnb are cheaper than on this forum?

My advice is to NEVER commit to a house rental until you are here in person.

Absolutely

More rules

If the price is in US$ - Forget it. Apart from being illegal, such ads are aimed at the clueless and tend to be stupidly priced. More than once I've seen 2 versions of the same ad, one in Rupiah, the other in Dollars with a large price increase.

Check the water and electricity are paid up to date before you commit to a contact.

Try to visit a property when it's raining

The best way to find a rental house is commonly by plodding the streets. If you ask a security guard he'll add a little for himself when talking to the owner. Try to hunt out 'for rent' signs and call directly.

In Bali, one of the best ways to find a house to rent is via The Bali Advertiser which is bi-monthly free newspaper for expats, and in which expats will advertise their homes if available for rental.  Also, realtors are commonly used here.

Folks here in Bali rarely put out a "for rent sign" on their property as in fact, most of the homes for rent aren't to be found along the streets that are normally heavy in foot traffic.

Bali advertiser reduced a lot the AD about house for rent and the few stil pubblishing AD are agencies.
Better check it out wirh OLX website, where the AD come directly from the owners.
Also, I see often signs on the streets hunging on houses for rents.

For local sites

KT = Bedrooms
KM = Bathroom

If it says 2+1, it's 2 bedrooms and a maid's room

Very simple - As I've suggested many times, estate agents (real estate agents) are mostly products of mummies and daddies that failed to get married.
They advertise on expat sites in the hope they'll rip some poor sod off for a sack of cash.
Many will really prove their lack of married parents by trying to sell you land, something that's very much illegal here, but they do it anyway.
Estate agents, voices are from the devil's anus.

Agree with Ubudian, pick up a free copy of the Bali Advertiser as they usually list quite a few places for rent. When we were looking for a place, we also found notice boards here and there such as in coffee shops etc where people would advertise a place for rent.
