Entry requirements
The information on this page covers the most common types of travel and reflects the UK government’s understanding of the rules currently in place. Unless otherwise stated, this information is for travellers using a full ‘British Citizen’ passport.

The authorities in the country or territory you’re travelling to are responsible for setting and enforcing the rules for entry. If you’re unclear about any aspect of the entry requirements, or you need further reassurance, you’ll need to contact the embassy, high commission or consulate of the country or territory you’re travelling to.

You should also consider checking with your transport provider or travel company to make sure your passport and other travel documents meet their requirements.

Entry rules in response to coronavirus (COVID-19)
Entry to Cyprus
As of 1 August 2020, the UK is in Cyprus’ Category B: this means that tourists are permitted to travel to Cyprus, but they need to provide a negative COVID-19 test result on arrival, obtained within 72 hours before travel. On 31 July 2020, The Republic of Cyprus government announced that test results can be in the form of an email or SMS, but the result itself and/or appointment letter must include the date and time when the test was taken. Children under 12 years old do not require to be tested in order to travel to Cyprus. Please see the Republic of Cyprus Information Office website for further information.

You should not use the NHS testing service to get a test in order to facilitate your travel to another country. You should arrange to take a private test. The UK government guide to testing for COVID 19 contains useful links and further information. Internet search of the words ‘COVID testing near me’ will bring up many private and local testing facilities (fees can vary). You may want to check with the relevant Embassy that the test you decide on meets the entry requirements for the country in question.

All travellers to Cyprus must complete a Cyprus Flight Pass before travelling, available on the Cyprus Flight Pass website. You will be responsible for ensuring your PCR test result is uploaded to Cyprus Flight Pass within 24 hours of your departure. If you need to provide your appointment letter you can upload both documents in a single photo. In addition to obtaining the Cyprus Flight Pass, passengers are required to carry with them, in hard copy or electronically, copies of these documents. You will be asked to present your flight pass prior to boarding and on arrival at immigration.

Legal residents of Cyprus and Cypriot ID holders, who are permitted to enter Cyprus on presentation of proof of residence or Cypriot nationality, may be tested on arrival in Cyprus – further details are available on the Cyprus Flight Pass website and from the Republic of Cyprus Information Office.

The Cyprus government has announced the launch of a help desk to assist travellers with queries regarding the use of the Cyprus Flight Pass. This service is accessible by telephone +(357) 2484 1234 and through the Cyprus Flight Pass e-platform. You should continue to track developments through the Republic of Cyprus Information Office.

The authorities in the north of Cyprus are now permitting entry to arrivals from the UK. You will be required to show a negative COVID-19 PCR test result (done between 0 – 120 hours prior to the time of the flight) on arrival. You must then enter authority-assigned quarantine facilities, at your own expense, for 7 days. A second PCR test will be carried out at the end of the quarantine period.

All travellers should be aware that if other passengers on your flight subsequently test positive on arrival to Cyprus, you may be subject to further quarantine/self-isolation measures. These will be mandatory and you should comply with the Cypriot authorities’ requirements.

Regular entry requirements
Visas

The rules on travel to and from the Republic of Cyprus, including travel to or from the north, will stay the same until 31 December 2020.

Visas from 1 January 2021

The rules for travelling or working in Europe will change from 1 January 2021:

You will be able to travel to Cyprus for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa for purposes such as tourism. This is a rolling 180-day period.
As Cyprus is not within the Schengen area, visits to other EU countries will not count against this total.
To stay for longer, to work or study, or for business travel you will need to meet the entry requirements set out by Cyprus. This could mean applying for a visa or work permit. You should check with the Republic of Cyprus High Commission what type of visa, if any, you will need.
Periods of stay authorised under a visa or permit will not count against the 90-day limit.
If you’re a resident in Cyprus, you are advised to carry your Republic of Cyprus-issued residency documents when entering/exiting the Republic of Cyprus.

The Republic of Cyprus does not recognise the self-declared ‘Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ in the north of Cyprus, nor residence permits issued by the administration there.

The Republic of Cyprus authorities may count time spent in the north of Cyprus towards the 90 day visa free total. If you overstay, you may potentially face difficulties at the airport on exit or re-entry.

The European Commission has not yet set out how the limit of 90 days in any 180-day period for visa-free travel will be implemented for those who are already travelling in the EU or Schengen Area on 31 December 2020.

If you are travelling to Cyprus before 31 December 2020 and will stay until 1 January 2021 or later, you should check with the Republic of Cyprus High Commission for information on how the 90-day visa-free limit will apply to you. At border control for Cyprus, you may need to:

show a return or onward ticket
show you have enough money for your stay
use separate lanes from EU, EEA and Swiss citizens when queueing
Your passport may be stamped on entry and exit.

Passport validity
The rules on travel will stay the same until 31 December 2020.

Your passport should be valid for the proposed duration of your stay; you do not need any additional period of validity on your passport beyond this. However, if you’re travelling to the north of Cyprus, their administration advises that your passport should be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry to the north.

Passport validity from 1 January 2021
From 1 January 2021, you must have at least 6 months left on an adult or child passport to travel to most countries in Europe (not including Ireland).

If you renewed your current passport before the previous one expired, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. Any extra months on your passport over 10 years may not count towards the 6 months needed.

Check your passport is valid for travel before you book your trip. You will need to renew your passport before travelling if you do not have enough time left on your passport.

UK Emergency Travel Documents
UK Emergency Travel Documents (ETDs) are accepted for entry, airside transit and exit from Cyprus.
