Hi all
I'm John and I'm currently researching the possibility of relocating to Southeast Asia.

I'm trying to work out the practicality of moving to Thailand. Of course I would rent first to establish exactly where I would like to live, but that aside.
I'm in my 50's with years of work experience but know diploma.

If I purchased a flat/house outright, that would clearly reduce my monthly outgoing, but I would like to get work to cover basic living expenses. Is this possible?

Hope you can provide some guidance/reality.

Never done that

Buying a place, Keep you at that place, As it can be hard to sell if you don´t like the place after some time, So some research in the place befor buying is a good idea.

I am not talking about go and see the area for a day or 2, But living in the same area for 6-12-24 month befor buying, Find out on the local Amphoe and people in the area, If there is plan to build shopping center, new Condo tower and so on, If one pick a Condo with a view.  Be sad to see the View gone, And the money you might have pay for view , Is gone for good.
This can be hard to get infomation on if not a Thai.

Then after you buy a Condo, There is going to be a monthly / yearly fee for every.
All unite need to pay for the people running the place, Office staff, Garden, cleaner, security guard  and so on, All so ekstra money for fix the place, Money for improvement and so on.

This total money is split between the numbers of Condo unite, If 1 or more unite don´t pay, Well, Then all the unite that pay have to pay more per month / year, Or there not going to be the money to cover it all, So the more unite that don´t pay, The money you have to pay.

I rent 6 or 7 condo in my time in Thailand, And all my Thai landlord say the same thing, To many don´t pay, So that have to pay more.

I live in one place where the rest of condo unite say no to pay for the others that dont pay, And after 5-6 month, It start to look like "shit" around the place, As they have to let go on some of the cleaning, garden staff, Theft from the garage as no guard for the night shift. Think you get my point !!

Let look at some numbers.

Let say a condo cost you 4.000.000 baht, plus the monthly / early fee.

As i know my way around Thailand, And i dont mind living in a Thai only area, I can all over  Thailand find a nice place to live for 6.000-10.000 baht pr month.
Let use the 10.000 baht for what i want to point out.

10.000 X 12 for 1 year is 120.000 baht per year.
Before i have use 4.000.000 i can live around Thailand. Move when i want to for 33.33 years, before i use the same amount of money, Then put ontop that, The money i save per month / yearly for not being the owner...
Ontop of that, I dont have to pay for when thing break down.

If you set on own a Condo, I think going for condo in condo tower that 20 years or older, Simple because back then they use better materials back then, So special the sound from your neighbor is not going to be a problem.

We move in a total new condo tower, And as Thai want every thing to be a cheap as it can be, It was build with the cheap materials.
It was a nightmare the sound from our neighbor,  The people ontop of our condo.
And every one i every vissit in the newer condo tower around Thailand have being the same.
I do know some people dont mind it, But i do !!!!

Well of cause this is only my view on it.

We now live in my wife house, A gift from her father to us.
And i can say, i hope i never have to go back to a condo again.
If i get to be single again, I am going to rent a small house for sure...

Kindly.
