Hello everyone, this is my first time posting onto the forum.

I will be living in Veliko Tarnovo permanently and wanted to know what was the best health insurance to have? I have tried Allinaz, but their insurance cover is temporary, how long does their policy usually last? As again I want to live in the city permanently with my girlfriend

Kind regards

Hi Joao,

To give you a good, professional advice is important to know your country origin.
If you are an EU citizen, the next question is - Are you going to have social security in Bulgaria?

I guess your policy with Allianz was for traveling abroad and if you intend to stay for a longer period, you have to find a different solution.

If you come from outside the EU, you will need  - Mandatory Medical Insurance for foreign citizens resident in the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria. Here you can see basic information and prices ***
It's mandatory and covers only emergency cases.

If you will have social and health security in BG, you may upgrade your cover with voluntary health insurance.  The price depends on your age.

And finally, you can choose a health product that covers health treatment all over the world which is best as cover and at a higher price.

I hope that information will be helpful to find the best solution for you.

Hi Aneliya,
Can you provide website or email address for any private insurance inside Bulgaria to upgrade beyond Mandatory Medical ?

We've found Galya Zlatanova to be very helpful. She found health insurance policies for all of our family members and our car. At much better prices than we had found. She is an Insurance Consultant/Broker at   2M Broker Ltd.,
Address: Druzhba, Tsarigradski complex, bl.280, ent. E., Sofia, Bulgaria
Email: office@2mbroker.com
Please tell her that Marilyn King  recommended her. We don't get a commission  or  any benefit from recommending her but do  it  because she is very helpful,  understanding  and patient.

Magicalme,
Thanks for your assistance...how long have you had this insurance? also have you used it yet? If so, how was that experience?

Thank you for the recommendation.  I have catastrophic insurance only and have relied on my Medicare and if I had an emergency I would not be able to fly back in time to US  for proper care.   I will contact your referral.

Hi John,
I sent an email inquiry to Galya at 2M Broker last week...she is putting together some info for a quote and says she will get it to me early next week.I asked about coverage which picks up where Mandatory stops. This will undoubtedly be private coverage, if it exists...hoping I don't have to go to any of the international companies such as Bupa, Allianz, Cigna, Prime Meridian, Axa, etc...they are VERY expensive.

Had it  for over a year but have not had  to use it. Did a lot of research  on  our own  before we found Galya and she has been really helpful.

Hello Aneliya Angelova...i read your comments above about health insurance for those from outside the EU..
"If you will have social and health security in BG, you may upgrade your cover with voluntary health insurance.  The price depends on your age."
Can you please tell me more about this "upgrade"...you can send private message if you are required by Expat.com

I notice that a lot of the private insurance companies apparently do not issue policies for persons (non-EU) over 64.  Is anyone aware of "upgraded" health insurance (not the basic mandatory insurance) being offered?
