UK Bank accounts post Brexit

I have seen in the news that Lloyds and Barclays are closing some expat accounts in the EU. However, Malta isn't one of the countries mentioned. I have kept an HSBC and Nationwide account whilst my husband still has a Lloyds account.

I'm pretty sure my HSBC is safe as they have branches here. Don't know about either the Lloyds or Nationwide. If really pressed I'll change the address to my step daughters but I don't want to.

Has anyone any further information.

I think that all banks are reviewing their activities and HSBC  is reducing its branch numbers in Malta. It's not an expat issue so dont worry.
It's good to have a BOV account in Malta so reccomend that you open one. My Scottish account, Clydesdale is definitely not interested in offering anything service wise but its convenient of course so I have my transfers to BOV and occasional top ups in UK to keep it live.
All banks in Europe (and UK) are looking to reduce Branches and drive us to a cashless society.

I already have a Bov account but my husbands pension goes directly into his Lloyd account and I do use my Nationwide account for various UK expenses. Ideally I would like to keep both.

It seems that closure of UK bank accounts depends on the UK bank and the EU country

There are other banks as well as BOV, we are with BNF and have never had any problems.

The latest information I have is that the UK and EU have failed to come to an agreement on banking rules post Brexit and that there may be an issue at the end of the negotiation period if this is not resolved.  Basically, the banks will not have licenses to provide services to EU residents.

However, none of this information has come from the EU or UK governments, it is all from media reports.  My advice would be to make enquiries direct to your non-EU bank.

I still use a UK address and an EU address. They know where I am and have no issues. I am with Barclays bank.

Our daughter still has an account with HSBC with no problem; however, these reports in the Media are only 2 days old, so there is potential for this to have some elements of truth in it should there not be a trade agreement between the EU and the UK.

LOL - just thought, if they do close her account, they'll lose out on getting her student loan repaid.
