Planning to retire in Portugal

Good day.
My name is Roland and reside in Johannesburg, South Africa.

I am currently still working, in the Aviation industry, at the same company for 33 years. We do the design, build, manufacture and assembly of aircraft and parts of aircraft. My thoughts at this stage is to consider an early retirement. I am an Engineer and work as a Program manager

Research on where to retire has found 3 potential countries, with our favourite being Portugal. However, one needs to see and get a "feel" first hand. So, our idea is to visit in 2021 and go to Porto, Lisbon and the Algarve to get an idea of the North, central and Southern parts.

I would seriously like to have a look at property to purchase. Something small (2 bed, 2 bath, with balcony/small garden, and parking) not in the middle of the city but, at the same time, not out in the rural outskirts. Is there any advise on whether to rent rather than purchase?

I am a young 57 year old and my partner a young 48 year old. Can anybody suggest the best route to take to start looking around at what region of Portugal would be best from a climate perspective and for the most value for money taking cost of living into consideration.

Thank you

JohnnyPT

Hi Rolanddi,

Please see this link, I think some (not all) of your questions are already answered there.

In addition to the various South African expats who are on this Portugal Forum, which I invite to help you, there is also Cindy, a 60 year old youtuber.

Recently, Cindy, a south african who have lived in Norway for some years, has bought a property in Central Portugal. In her youtube channel you can see all the process involved she has passed through to realise her life project. This may help anyone who is searching answers in subjects like this one.

There are also other expat vlogs on youtube, which I put here, a couple of months ago:

Good day JohnnyPT.
Thank you so much for your inputs for further research. Appreciate it.

Rolanddi,

I grew up in Joburg and my father worked in the aviation industry for many years. I admire the fact that you are gathering the courage to depart a lovely country, but that has its challenges, Many of my father's friends did not make a move and they find themselves financial hostages.

I think this is one where you could drop me a line or contact, I will send you a list of 15 questions and we will be able to see very quickly what regions are worth investigating. This is a fairly standard process we use with people moving to Portugal from many countries and who, like yourself, need to discover Portugal. We do not publish it on forums as the answers are then confidential and specific to you only.

Feel free to be in touch and I will send you that list of questions. If nothing else, it mught save you some petrol...

Rolanddi

Thank you Algarveseniorliving for your response and kind of support.

First things first. Hats off to your dad! Wise man! :-)

Any guidance towards finding "the place" or even the region where we would be most comfortable would be great. Your experience, together with the list of questions you mentioned, would be appreciated.

Thank you
