Any suggestions for western Christmas Lunch this year?
Where abouts ? There are a few western restaurants in Thao Dien and a large number of expats
Roast turkey and all the trimmings 😍
Not to fussed on location, will be staying night, nice location for walk/lookaround
Jlgarbutt's offer sounds good "Roast turkey and all the trimmings " what time?
I'd be up for something in Thao Dien/ D2 area, Thanksgiving or Christmas. Didn't do anything last year. Kind of a downer.
Jakes in D1, now in D2 as well always does a nice traditional meal for Christmas and Thanksgiving.

Hi, I just sent them an email asking what dates for Christmas menu, what the menu is and price, also mentioned any deals for group booking in case anyone wants to meet up.
I'll pass on the info when I have it.
Appreciated, thank you
An update on Jake's, he is getting prices for American beef cuts for Christmas from suppliers will let me know menu ideas and prices group booking deals etc.
He also said thank you for mentioning him on forum.
So far he is currently still D1 he said he will move Jan 31st to D2.
He has been proactive saying he is going D2 but not yet moved.
Thank you - look forward to update

Been talking to Jake as well...He should have a location in D1 as well after the Pasteur Street place closes.
On another note......went the other night and had the nachos. BUT being from Texas, I passed on the pulled pork and bbq sauce. Instead had them use their chili and plenty of jalapenos. It was terrific. Love that place.
def1412 wrote:[BUT being from Texas, I passed on the pulled pork and bbq sauce.
Quan Ut Ut is quite good American BBQ. They have four sauces that I think they make. The ribs are as good as back home. Pulled pork and sausage are both good. The sides are also very good. My only gripe is no BBQ baked beans. I miss then with my pork and cole slaw so I usually sub the baked macaroni and cheese. The cole slaw is the way I like it but some others might not. Some like creamy, some like vinegary, this is a combination of both. Prices are high for VN but still cheaper than US.
They have a couple of locations and I've been to two of them but we mainly go to Thao Dien.

STOP! your making me hungry. LOL
I asked Jake if there was any chance poultry and roast vegies would find it on to his BBQ for those looking for English style as well as all the American goodies, he said was a bit too far out to price yet.
Never been to Ut Ut as I heard it was on the pricy side, but hey it's Christmas so who cares.
As prices and more options come in nearer the time, maybe a quick hands up for who is in for which date and location?

Yo this thread still alive?
Mr & Mrs Gobot are IN for Xmas Dinner / Xmas BBQ. At any Saigon location. That would be great. A toast to wonderful 2020.
Around I can probably drag @yoda too if he is.
Went to Quan Ut Ut the other day. They had new menus so you know what that means.
Prices went up. Before a full rack of ribs and three sides was 479K. Now a rack is 529K and NO sides included. Three sides will average another 100K so it's a pretty significant price increase.
Still delicious.

What's that pinkish thing on the left corner of the tray? Is that a banana above it?
The banana looking thing is a huge dill pickle that I am fairly certain they make in house. The taste was very similar to the pickles my mom used to make back on the farm. They were made in a large ceramic crock, not canned in jars. The pink on top of the ribs is another pickled vegetable. I'm not sure what it was but it was very sour and crisp. I ate some of it but with the large pickle and the vinegary-sour pink coleslaw in the lower right I really didn't need any more sour. The coleslaw is purple shredded cabbage with vinegar, mayonaise, other spices added to it.
I thought the pink things atop the ribs are tomato slices. Guess I need new glasses.
Why did they squeeze everything together on a small tray like it's canteen food instead of a meal that costs more than 600k?
It actually is on a metal canteen tray with a paper liner. It's a fairly standard presentation method for a barbecue restaurant. Most barbecue joints in the US are rough wooden tables, red checkered tablecloths, large servings of food in a very casual environment. It's redneck food and not supposed to be percieved as expensive or extravagant. Just down home cooking. Each person has normal plates and it's served family style.
Of course, everything on that tray would normally be ordered by and consumed by one person in the US. I remember the first time I went there with a supplier. This was very early in my Vietnam experience. A setup like this came and I looked at the other two guys and wondered what they planned to eat! They did have another platter that came with beef brisket and sausage. It's one of the many reasons why Americans tend to be fat.
Now, in full disclosure that platter was killed off by my 14 year old daughter and I with absolutely no problems.

Yes the authentic presentation for BBQ is the opposite for rack of lamb.
I say you got shortchanged on the fries, but I can taste that whipped mashed potatoes and gravy.

Funny thing on that comment, my daughter was upset and specifically pointed out that they cut the standard allotment of fries by about 50% from the last visit. They are actually really good crispy seasoned fries.
The only thing this place lacks is a good side of BBQ beans. On another note, while I didn't order it this time, they do have a really good baked mac and cheese.
Update on Jakes:-
He is in the process of cooking 350+ turkeys for something the Americans call "Thanksgiving" being British we only know Christmas lol,,,,
Anyways he is busy as and has ordered American prime rib for prime rib and ham Christmas dinner he said being American prime rib it will be kinda expensive maybe around 1.5-2mill with the ham bringing down towards the 1.5 end of price but he is too busy at moment to set price in stone.

At that price, the buffet at the Caravelle Hotel is a great option, including all you care to eat lobster.

Real imported PRIME RIB from good ol USA??? I've been trying for 15 years to get some here, VN butchers can't even get close and Omaha beef wouldn't ship it here, or any where outside the USA. Understand he's running a restaurant business not a retail operation for beef. I'm here to tell you though if he could get me about 5 lbs of chill prime rib he could just about name his price. I'd send our driver up from down here in the Delta to his place with the cash and a iced down cooler to pick it up. I already have the horseradish for the meat and sour cream for the baked potatoes to go with it.

Now you mention it The Nikko Hotel does a buffet for around the same price and I been there first night in HCMC 4 lobsters, 3 plates of Shrimp later we started on the beef, pork, lamb, noodle, fish and were half way under he table stuffed full before we could waddle back to look at the hundreds of desert options for 1,300,000VND (55 USD} beer, cocktail, soft drinks, juice, tea, coffee included - search "BEST All You Can Eat SEAFOOD Buffet in Saigon VIETNAM!" for a mouth watering video I would defiantly go there for Christmas dinner if open.

Sent you a PM
With a month to go do people want to suggest date/dates?
Andy
I'm still sourcing info, but I'd be happy with western style buffet luncheon on Christmas day - free flow wine an added bonus--location is not key concern

Does anyone have solid info on the Thanksgiving turkey at Jake's? I looked at their web site but found nothing. I am from the US, and I haven't had a turkey dinner since I found a place in Roppongi, Tokyo on Thanksgiving ten years ago.

Hi,
Can I confirm something - on their menu for buffet it says "house wine, beer, cocktail, soft drink, juice, tea, coffee included"
What is the "Beverage Alcohol Package: 500,000++ per person" about if drinks are included? is it just me confused or do they mean the house stuff is crap so spend anther 500++ for better plonk?
