Status of proposed law for faster citizenship?

Post new topic

Hello,

Does anyone know the current status of the proposed legislation to quicken the naturalization application process??

The law would allow civil judges of the ordinary courts to approve an applying for citizenship by foreign people in possession of their Paraguayan “Cedula” or Identity Card and of all requirements to apply for citizenship.

Of course the actual, real-life "on the ground" process would most likely not be as streamlined as presented on paper, due to bureaucratic ineffciencies and other undesirable factors.   Nevertheless if passed, this would be a positive development on many levels.

Atentamente.

So, it's on second hearing. The Prez vetoed some other amendments as well but he totally rejects to simplify the naturalisation process through this proposal. However, the enormous number of applicants for citizenship needs a solution for sure, so they must come out with a compromise, but will not be that fast.

Is that fact checked ?
"enormous number of applicants" ??

I would not at all be surprised about the "enormous number of applicants". Foreigners/non-native Paraguyans from many countries (e.g. India, Pakistan, Canada, etc.) pursuing residency also believe (erroneously) that it is also easy to apply and get citizenship as well without much effort.

Yes, and a lot of residents have the qualifying amount of time. They all applied and then are waiting for the test or the decision or the passport.

For those foreign permanent residents who you know that have submitted applications for naturalization, what has been the duration of the waiting time for test, decision or passport thus far?

That information may be influential as to whether to proceed (or not) in the process, if current law continues in present form.
