Cost of Living in Mexico in 2021

Post new topic

Cheryl

Hello everybody,

We would like to take stock of the changing cost of living in Mexico, particularly in your city or region. The aim is to measure the impact that the health crisis may have had on your expenses.
This will help other expatriates on the spot and all those who would like to relocate there in the near or more distant future.

> What is the price of a property rental in Mexico? What about buying a property?

> How much does petrol cost or how much does it cost to use the various public transport services?

> How much do you spend on average on your weekly groceries in Mexico? Have you noticed a change in the price of staple foodstuff?

> What is the price of your health insurance? How much does seeing a general practitioner or specialist cost?

> How much are your children's school fees? What about the cost of childcare?

> How much do you spend on your regular bills (water, electricity, mobile phone package, internet subscription etc.) on a monthly basis?

> What budget do you set aside for your leisure activities in Mexico? What is the price of a cinema or concert ticket? How much does a subscription to a gym cost?

Do not hesitate to indicate any other price changes you may have in mind.

Many thanks,

Cheryl,

For the Lake Chapala region:

> What is the price of a property rental in Mexico? What about buying a property?
Properties vary widely of course but I would say an average rental cost would be $900 USD.  For purchasing property our average is $250,000 USD.

> How much does petrol cost or how much does it cost to use the various public transport services?
Gas is 19 pesos per liter. Buses have not changed. Still 7 pesos or 8 pesos for 3rd and 2nd class buses receptively.

> How much do you spend on average on your weekly groceries in Mexico? Have you noticed a change in the price of staple foodstuff?
No real change.

> What is the price of your health insurance? How much does seeing a general practitioner or specialist cost?
No health insurance. Pay as I go. GP costs vary but about 300 pesos ($15). Specialists 800 or so ($40)

> How much are your children's school fees? What about the cost of childcare?
No children

> How much do you spend on your regular bills (water, electricity, mobile phone package, internet subscription etc.) on a monthly basis?
Water 250 pesos per month ($12.50 USD)
Electricity 400 peos per month ($20)
Cell phone 200 pesos/month ($10 USD)
Internet 390 pesos/month ($20 USD)

> What budget do you set aside for your leisure activities in Mexico? What is the price of a cinema or concert ticket? How much does a subscription to a gym cost?

Of no value.  No $ prices added.
Do you want many of your potential readers have to stop and figure out
out how many dollars you are talking about?  You could figure it out once
and save a bunch of people all that time.

Well fredex
let's say the economy is stable everywhere which would be the best scenario.  Do you realize the amount of time involved to translate the peso into a familiar currency in every country of every potential ex-pat? Currencies translators are very available in most countries and many are free.

Fred, if you intend to live in a country with other than USD as its currency you should start preparing yourself to do conversions. "www.xe.com" is a good app. Currency conversions "float"  They can vary significantly. Over a year the USD has varied from a high of 25 to 19 MXN. With a current 20 MXN.

A Hint Fred. Don't chide people that made a sincere effort to give you real time pricing and you are not willing to delve further into your proposed lifestyle

Hi all

Have any of you tried to use www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/ which will give you accurate and up-to-date living costs for most cities and towns in Mexico or anywhere else in the world for that matter? It will allow you to compare and contrast the prices between 2 or 3 places simultaneously!

Generally good basic tool. Some of the figures are not current, but with frequent price changes Its' difficult to know. Gas for instance has gone up , and meals have gone up.  Mac Donalds is pretty much gone here as is Burger King
But baseline information is helpful
