Taxes - moving in the half of a year

Post new topic

e1lobo

Greetings everyone,

I have a question and I hope you can help me.

I was working in Germany until end of May 2020. From June 2020 I am working for a new company in UK and I moved there in September 2020.

I do not have UK nor EU citizentship.

Considering the tax year end in April 2020, do you think if I should declare my taxes in UK?

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

In general, your nationality makes no difference in how you are assessed for taxation purposes.  Where you declare your world-wide income for tax purposes is decided by where you are deemed as being resident, that generally is regarded as where you  live for more than 183 days in the tax year.

This gets complicated because the UK tax year runs from Apr > Mar, while most other countries use the general calendar year and both regulators will use their own domestic rules.  Other countries will regard you as tax resident from the moment you register.  Their are taxation agreements between the UK and other countries, these in general apply to income taxes, not things like social taxes.

If your tax affairs are complicated, my advice would be to seek advice from a qualified professional - that's not me; if you decide to use one, then this link will take you to a list of such professionals who advertise their services on this Forum.

Hope this helps.

Your tax domicile’s usually the country your father considered his permanent home when you were born. It can change, but that is the basic rule.

Non domiciled tax residents do not pay tax in the UK on foreign earned income as long as that money doesn't enter the UK.

You should see a tax accountant specialising in Non Doms.
