Hi erveyone. I'm in need of a bit of help. I have some belongings being brought back from Bulgaria to the UK and the courier has asked me for a EROI number ?? Has anyone heard of this before. I went online and I think it's more for companies doing imports rather than just your adverage person. The ,GOV website says just tell him to use GBPRb ut he said he still needs on for the Bulgarian side of things. Can anyone shed some light on this please.

No private individuals can apply for an EORI number too and you do need it now U.K. is not in EU.

I don’t have a link handy but I’m sure a Google search will find it. Also might be worth checking out the various expat FB groups, much easier to use than these forums

What Helen said! As you have someone else dealing with taking the goods through customs, the goods can't leave the EU without one. Actually, if I read it correctly, you would still need one if you were taking the items through customs yourself, and the same for people moving their property to the EU.
Here's the link: https://www.gov.uk/eori

You can obtain your EORI number through any customs office in Bulgaria, with your ID card. I was told it was free, but was charged 10 leva, probably because I'm a foreigner. I needed one to clear a small parcel!

Out of curiosity do you know if this can be done from outside BG? The next time I’ll be there will be when I bring our belongings over when we begin the move and although I don’t think I need a BG EORI number for that I will get one anyway, as I’m sure I’ll need it for future use

I cant get to a customs office in Bulgaria as I'm in the uk. I also dont have an ID card

You need to get the UK EORI number, you have to go to the gov.website that Jane put on her reply click on the link and it will take you to the page you need to get it.

What Bullador said!
Neo, in this case you need a GB EORI, a BG one won't do the job. That GovUK page (scroll up to my earlier post) has the link to apply.

HelenDinBG

I’m sure I also read somewhere that your U.K. and BG EORI numbers are the same except you add on a digit or something??? Wish I could remember where I saw that

You only need an Eori  number if you a business importing and exporting  if you are a private importer and the items are for you own private use you dont need this Eori.

I spoke to HMRC 2 weeks back regarding this and they clarified with me on the phone  that I dont need it.

Hope this helps you..

bullador

You can get your EORI number from the gov.uk website...........just google it

bullador

Im afraid you do need that number, UK customs dont need it but other countries do..........my package got stopped at the french customs and they needed it.......and they charged me VAT on it, no customs duties just the vat................it was personal belongings but because the cost of what was in the package came to 420 pounds they charged me 108 euros.............Bulgarian customs also requires the number. Best to have it than not, if you dont have it they told me they would return the package to sender.

janemulberry

It's surely worth the minimal hassle of applying for it to be sure your items will get through safely and without massive tax whacked on them.

Bullador, was that even with all the right paperwork, or was it an expensive learning experience in what's needed? Ouch! Concerning if we're going to get charged so much on personal items.

Its easy enough to get a number, just apply and one is generated for you straight away. No hassles at all

I was told to get an Eori number by my transport company but HMRS told me here in the UK that as I  am a private individual  not a business that  any goods that I was importing back into the UK for my own personal use I dont need one but they did give me one as the Transport company needed it.

GinnyHench

You are correct. Even private individuals who are retired, and have no association with any business must have the EORI to receive a package from customs.

bullador

Hi Jane, I had all the correct paperwork, all the forms filled in that the courier gave us....and still got charged...........even when we put they were personal belongings....I queried it with them but of course you cant argue with customs, so i paid it as i needed the package...

janemulberry

Ouch! Customs people are the same the world over, unfortunately.  :(  Once flying becomes less of a hassle with tests and quarantine, my guess is that flying to pick up or deliver stuff, taking it as personal baggage, will work out cheaper.

I've sorted the number out now thanks for the help. The courier said it with help a lot. Only thing is now he's asking for full payment before he comes over to the UK. If this normally the case?
