insect invasion - start of rainy season

Post new topic

sanooku

Last year the day the rainy season started we had large swaths of firefly type insect invade the building. They came in through the windows and was mostly attracted by the light it seemed.

I don't know if this is because we are somewhat in the outskirts of Vung Tau (maybe it's less frequent in the middle of the city).

Now that the rainy season has already started, I'm thinking of battening down the hatches and closing all windows fom dusk (last year they came at around 8pm).

Does anyone know what these insects are called. They were harmless, but they shred their wings, and the sheer number meant they left a terrible mess. Wings could be found everywhere in the apartment for weeks.

Termites

qnbui

Weird! Where I am in So California, I see termite swarms once or twice a year when it's hot and windy, never after rain but then again, we don't get much rain here in So Cal. I think they come from the eucalyptus tree in the bldg next to me but they've trimmed the tree down so it's been a year or two since I last saw the swarm.

The rove beetle doesn't shed wings everywhere but beware of them.  I tangled with a couple two years ago, and they left burns on my arms.

I'm not so sure about the connection with the rainy season anymore. The only reason I mentioned it (and even chose it as the heading. LOL) is because when they came last year I asked a local what is going on..he said they come soon after the first heavy downpour at the beginning of the rainy season.

I don't remember exactly what time of year it was last year. He could have meant the start of the 'stormy season' which of course arrives much later during the rainy season.

I do believe

Yes the start of the rainy season brings an onslaught of new insect types; some of them pretty big. Some of them very noisy.
