Hi Guys and Gals

I'm interested in sending an iPhone to a friend that lives in Puerto Plata. I live in the southeast of the US. What would be the safest and cheapest way to do it? whats the process with customs? will she have to pay fees to retrieve the package? i was thinking fedex or ups because I don't want USPS to lose my package. Thanks!

Under $200 - no tax

Please contact me in private.  I was in the cellular business for 15 years. And I have taken and sent phones to friends all over central and South America and in the Dominican.

I'm not trying to sell you anything.  I can just give you the information I have. But you will need a commercial invoice. If the phone is under $200 there's no Duty.

FedEx and UPS both take forever and charge an arm and a leg.

And many times your fear is right... it doesn't ever arrive.

They might

Brand new and over 200 us you are paying duty plus a minimim of 18% sales tax.  You can use a mail forwarder out of Miami.  Your friend needs to open an account with one from here.  It costs us 5 a pound from Miami to here and she will have to pay all the taxes!

Even if using a courier, they will open your package, charge you gravamen, 18% itbis, and a min. 1500 peso fee for the “gestion aduanal”.  It’s a PITA ... and especially if a new phone.  DGA is no joke.

If anyone has a workaround I would love to know!
