We are going on a boat charter at Paraty. Do I need a fishing license to throw a line in and try my luck.

Pete,

Check with the people running the charter:  they may already have it covered, or they may tell you that it's just not necessary for the trip you'll be taking.  If you want to get a license, it costs R$60 (boat and shore), and you can get it online here:

Hmmmm! For most of the years I've been here in Brazil I've registered for a fishing license (shoreline) without a hitch. I think I missed a year and trying the new system I hit a glitch. It goes through the gov.br system which says I'm an "estrangeiro" and doesn't recognize the resident part - I thing - of my situation. I can't seem to register.

Just as an FYI if anybody else tried this as a resident alien and has had success please let me know.

Thx

After a normal amount of persistence I did manage to get that fishing license. I learned that the difference between the embarcada (in a boat) and desembarcada (no boat) is that embarcada includes shoreline fishing. It isn't an either/or situation as it appears.

Now I just gotta find time and a place to go fishing.... Hmmm! I've been saying that for about 12 years now.
