Welcome to expat-Mexico Wiley,

Things are not as they were so the best source of current information might be
https://www.mexperience.com/mexico-news … june-2021/ They are a Merida newsletter that keeps a close watch on the changes. They also have documents available at a reasonable fee. You can easily read their newsletter at no cost.

The system was consistent and easy to explain. You went to a Mexican console in your country and they evaluated your income and paperwork. Now, some seem to be going to INM directly others are not getting a phone or email response.

My experience. I got 4 year temporary residency on June 3 2021. I did that without, without, leaving Mexico. This is new and has only been available for a few months.  I found it this was possible after having a long conversation with a couple from the US who had also got their residency from within Mexico in May 2021. I am in Huatulco in Oaxaca on the Pacific coast. I can only assume this may be available in other towns but i don't know. There is an immigration counselor, she is not a lawyer. Her name is Maria.  Now that I have my 4 year temporary I am told it will be easy to get permanent in 2025.  I, of course, had to show 6 months of bank statements that Maria printed off the computer, to prove i had sufficient income. The bulk of my income comes from rental property i own in Canada, not from a pension or social security. You can find out more by going to facebook pages about Huatulco, such as Huatulco Whats up Happening. Her name Maria Morales Vazquez. She has a facebook page.  Did not save me any money to do my residency this way from within Mexico,  Just saved me from needing to leave the country. It is possible that there are others here in Huatulco that could help you also. Message me if you want more info.

HI Alice,
I was thinking of going to Huatulco / Port Angel but it seems that it is very small and while the beach / village is nice, I am concerned that I would be bored very quickly. Are you in Huatulco itself and how do you find the expat community and social activities etc. Thanks Ross

Hi Ross. I am a person who does not need a lot of activities. If I want to go, there is water arobics on most Tuesdays and Thursdays.  There is Chahue beach club every Wednesday. There are about 10 people who nornally attend.  Entrance is free. There is pickle ball which i have not gone to. There were some women that played Mexican train. I know at least 20 people. This is low season now. Likely snowbirds will return in the fall. If you wanted to do some social activity 4 or 5 times a week you probably could.  There is a couple that golf more than once a week   The expats here have been really nice. In April a kind couple took me around in their car and showed me places. It is easy to meet people.

Thanks for the comments - what is "Mexican train". Pickle ball is a lot of fun - where is this played? Thanks for the comments - are there places for rent in your complex???  What type of rent is expected for a 2 bedroom for one month in January for example. thanks

Hi  Ross. Mexican train is a type of dominos. I don't know where pickle ball is played cuz I have never gone but i do hear people talk about it.  Places for rent in complex I'm at, very likely. Condo Pacifico. Also the condo complex next door has a sign outside place for rent. I you go on facebook page Huatulco What's Up Happening you will find posts for places to rent. Also if you join the group and say you are looking for a place to rent you will get many responses. Tomorrow i will write down the phone number on the sign next door and message you privately.  I don't want to venture a guess what the prices will be in January. i rented a 2 bedroom, furnished,  with a pool at the complex, May through end of September for 9000 pesos a month. Includes everythig but electricity. I have not recieved a bill yet so don't know the cost but I don't run the ac. To me it is breezy enough and actually cooler in June than it was in May.  Now it is rainy season so overcast frequently. I don't know what the rental price will be come high season, fall through winter. Also it seems you want just one month and so price will be more than say someone like me who wants to rent for 6 months to a year. Bahias de Huatulco Expats is another facebook site to look.

I did want to clarify something regarding getting residency from within Mexico.  A person needs to be in Mexico 180 days. I started the process after being in Mexico about 170 days. I could not go to the immigration office and get my green residency card until my 181 day. So you can't just come here for a few months and get your residency from within Mexico. You have to do it after you have been here for 180 days.

You were able to do that because of Covid-19 in a short window of time which has expired. Now Mx. Consulates are where people apply.

allycat  I am not certain your statement is correct, that applying from within Mexico is no longer available. I recieved my residency on June 3 2021, so very recently.  I am fairly certain i posted information about Maria Morales Vazques. She is on facebook and i am certain will clarify this for anyone at no charge. My initial consultation with her was free. Also as i stated this may not be available everywhere in Mexico. So perhaps where you checked it is no longer available. Huatulco, Oaxaca, may be different. I know 3 people and of course myself who have gotten their residency from within Mexico within the last month .

This is the person to talk to if you want accurate information.

I get no kickback. Just trying to be helpful.

We were in Merida to scout out the area last Nov for possible future retirement. I like the area, but not too sure about the heat as a full time location.

In general, you apply at the nearest Mexican consulate in your home country, prior to your move. You will need to show 6 months of financials from your bank and  fill out a questionnaire. If there are no issues, your passport will receive a stamped page approving your entrance to Mexico in order to apply for residency. You will have 6 months to begin this process but only 30 days, once you enter the country. You can apply for either temporary or permanent, depending on your financials. When we moved there in 2013, they would not allow us to apply for "resident permanente" right away, even though are financials qualified us.
Many people use an immigration lawyer to do this but we did it ourselves. For our 1 year, once we entered Mexico and started the application, it took 5 weeks to have our cards in our hands.
This info and process is very fluid and seems to change every year so a visit to the nearest Mexican Consulate is a good way to get up to date info.

Me and my wife just got our full time residents on Wed in Denver and was in mexico yesterday (friday). Went super easy.  We make more then the required monthly so they were super helpful at the denver consulate.  But did see a man come in and they told him no.  Felt bad till he started to argue with the mexican officials.  Enough to say they got very short with him very fast.  They had the month income requirements on there home page online so he should have known.

With the help of this board we were 100% ready when we got our date to apply in person.  And they even did the paperwork and interview with both of us together.

At the border we had a pair of super nice locals help us with our paperwork we needed to fill out and with the help of google translate everything went super smooth even with out pet (cat).

I can say when we stopped to ask for help we would get a not to good of a look from officials till they saw the full resident sticker in our passport then they became all smiles and super helpful.  So glad we did the work for it.

Went thru 2 check points so far (in Saltillo as of today) and was the same at each.... the federallies were super serious with us till they saw the full time paperwork then they were instant smiles and super helpful.

Read here it made a difference. And they were all right it seems they love us retirees down here it's nice.  Taking a 2 night stay here in saltillo (found a wonderfully airbnb in a secure neighborhood with a Oxxxo right next to the entrance and tons of good local food within walking distance) before we finish our trip to Lake chapala.

So everyone here to help us the last 2 months...THANKS!!!!!

We found rentals in Lake chapala from 450 to 1200 a month. Low end is a nice area and smaller house to the high end of our budget which was a house in a small compound halfway up the mountain side with killer views from the whole back side of the house...mountains and lake views from ground level.  We are cheap normally but might go to the top of our budget for the views to die for.
