Making friends commune close to La Rochelle

Hi Everyone, I moved to France late last year with my husband and I am doing my utmost to learn French. We live in commune 20 minutes inland from La Rochelle. Interested in meeting people socially, volunteering and getting involved in the community.
Any ideas would be very welcome. Thank you.
