According to their announcement, more than one billion doses or half a billion Chinese in China, 40% of the population, have been vaccinated.

Seeing that China is the birthplace of Covid and there are more than 1.4 billion Chinese living on top of one another, it's an astonishment to read that there are only 93,193 Covid cases and 4,636 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic. (Source: Statistics)

Ahhhhh but they had time to plan for it before they unleashed it on the whole world! ;)

Yah.  And I am only 25 years old (just don't mention it is the third time around!) ;)

I remember seeing news videos of huge Chinese apartment buildings with residents being locked down seems a really low number considering density and initial outbreak with not knowing whats going on, what safety measures to carry out, here in HCMC we have 150k+ with much lower density.

You would think that China has a higher density than Viet Nam, in fact, Viet Nam is double the density rate of China.

not that difficult really

Vietnam is approximately 331,210 sq km, while China is approximately 9,596,960 sq km, making China 2,798% larger than Vietnam. Meanwhile, the population of Vietnam is ~98.7 million people (1.3 billion more people live in China).

Consider the hypothesis that Vietnam has a denser population than China because it is a coastal country while China has huge sparsely populated interior deserts.  Vietnam varies from about 250-400 km from the western border to the ocean.  At the narrowest it is only about 50km.  There would be no way to check this, but If you carved out an area of China that is say 300 km from the coast, the density might be as high as that of Vietnam.  It would include Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzou/Hong Kong.  Think too about the US.   For those who know the demographics, most of the population is on the two coasts.

More than half of China (West and Southwest regions) are uninhabitable, or not desirable for most people, so 94% of the population live in less than 40% of the country's acreages.

In term of real life density, China's is more than Vietnam by a country mile.  Below is my list of the top 10 cities with highest density:

Chengdu:  13,000/km2
Shenzhen:  8,600/km2
Shanghai:  3,900/km2
Guangzhou:  2,500/km2
Beijing:  1,300/km2
Tianjin:  1,200/km2
Jiangsu:  830/km2
Guangdong:  700/km2
Shandong:  650/km2
Zhejiang:  630/km2

The result based on those 10 high density cities: 3,330 ppl/km2.

My list of the top 10 cities with highest density in Vietnam as of 2021:

Saigon:  4,300/km2
Vũng Tàu:  2,980/km2
Hanoi:  2,400/km2
Bà Rịa:  2,250/km2
Nam Định:  1,800/km2
Bắc Ninh:  1,730/km2
Hải Phòng:  1,335/km2
Thái Bình:  1,200/km2
Bình Dương:  915/km
Cần Thơ:  890/km2

The result based on those 10 high density cities:  1980 ppl/km2

I spent several hours on those two lists and checked the numbers very carefully.  The data were collected from several different sources, checked for veracity, and compared,

It knocked me off my chair seeing VT ranks second in density.  I definitely do not feel that at all.  VT is never crowded except on weekends and holidays.  On weekdays, there are many parts of the city where one can walk in the middle of the street without a worry; there's never a line at the stores; and the beaches are practically empty most of the time.

BTW, China has so much uninhabited land that they announced last year that if anyone wishes to lease an island in China, there are almost 500 available (most are not very desirable).  The lowest price is $535/yr/hectare plus other fees and tons of bureaucracy.

Since Monday, registration for Covid vaccination has been available citywide.  Check with your ward  (if your spouse in Vietnamese, ask her to contact tổ trưởng directly.)

Even if you've already registered online (a national list), a local registration is required to be vaccinated in VT.

From the post you wrote the day Ms My registered you, I think you're registered with the ward, not online with the national register.

I don't think you'll need to register with the one online because you'll receive the shot in your district before the national register has the time to look at their list.

In Saigon, the vaccination is given as fast as the vaccine arrives.  Each district organises its own sessions, up to 3 sessions per day, to make sure that everyone above 18 be vaccinated.

When you registered with the district, they counted the number of doses needed and submitted the request to Saigon.  As soon as Saigon distributes the doses, your district will give your ward the portion it needs, and your ward will call you in for the shot.  It's much better than waiting for the national register to get to you.

So far, 2M people in Saigon has been vaccinated.  The goal is to have 70% vaccinated, so there are 4.3M to go.  There's a good chance it'll happen before the end of August.

The government doesn't force people to be vaccinated.  Registration is not mandatory, but here in VT, if you wish to receive the shot, you must register with your own ward.

Where does the 2 million figure come from? I read today on CNN that Vietnam has managed to vaccinate 0.5% of the population... Who to trust ?

My source, head of a government department in Saigon, told me that yesterday.  It's one of several inside sources that have provided me with information in the last 3 years.

I don't read CNN for news about Vietnam.  I figure since I live here and am able to learn from the source, the information I have is more accurate than some reporters in the US culling them from God knows where.

I don't know the percentage of the population that are already vaccinated.  I only know that 2M in Saigon have received at least one dose.

My 22 year old grandniece received her 2nd dose this morning.  Her first shot was Astra Zeneca on April 25 at Institute of Ethnic Medicine and Pharmacy, the same day her parents (53 and 63 years old) and cousin (29 years old) received theirs.  Her second shot was also AstraZeneca (but produced by Meiji) at Phu Nhuan District Hospital.  My niece whose SO is a German physician with a medical office in Saigon has her and her staff's (including her driver and housekeeper) second shots scheduled for next week.

Perhaps my relatives are very lucky people who all got their shots before everyone else?

Thanks Ciambella for explaining about my probable Ward Covid registration at local level, but just to be safe & cover my a** I went into the Gov one & registered on it too. As a matter of interest & pertaining to this post, at the end of registration process it gives you a very detailed break down on how many & where the vaccines have been distributed & given etc etc. Dont know how accurate it is but its there anyways.

goodolboy

Just watching a program on BBC World news & its discussing the now open travel between US & UK with proof of vaccination even the one shot J & J so that way its ok. But going the other way oh no no if you have had the Astra vaccine & two shots you cant get into the US because Astra is not approved there even after all this time. Well why would they approve a vaccine that costs 4 usd a shot on average when they are quite happy with their own vaccines that cost their government in the region of 20  usd a shot & big pharma pulls weight in US. So anyone thats thinking about travelling on a vaccine passport once things open up there is a lot to look into & you wont get in to UK, US or Europe on the China or Sputnik ones either!

As far as I know they're not letting anyone into the US from UK except for US citizens (and diplomats and such).  It's not because they reject AstraZeneca as a vaccine.  They are also not letting in people from Ireland, Schengen zone, Iran, Brazil, China, South Africa or India.

OK I will be a little more specific, it was a cross pond discussion with people supposedly in the know in the discussion. The subject of the discussion revolved round the UK gove lifting all restrictions on travel from the US to the UK providing the travellers have had full & approved shots & from the US side it was categorically stated that before the US opens up to travel to citizens from the UK or where ever they would have to have proof of vaccination with an approved FDA  vaccine.
The Astra, China & the Sputnik vaccines have been widely distributed & used throughout the world & the point I suppose was that when the US eventually opens up to travel from non US citizens unless & until these vaccines get FDA approval its going to restrict entry from countries that have predominantly used these vaccines.

The other point being made was that if the US does not need their Astra vaccine it could release their stock pile to the world who would gladly accept it which looks like they are now doing.
Which I suppose then opens up the debate......if its no good & not approved in US why is it good for the rest of the world?

Who categorically stated that, and were they people who make that decision?  I have seen nothing that shows the US will base entry only on approved vaccinations.

The reason AstraZeneca does not yet have US approval is because the company has not yet provided the data the US wants.  They have decided instead to apply for full approval rather than emergency, which will further delay the process.  There is no US prejudice against the vaccine -- the company simply has not provided the data necessary for emergency approval.  I'm sure the vaccine will be fully approved eventually.

Indian made COVAXIN had submitted data (stage II trials) to US FDA for emergency approval to which FDA asked to furnish final stage III data for full and final approval.
