Metro Quito has surpassed Metro Guayaquil as the largest metropolitan area in Ecuador.

According to the Ecuadorian census agency, INEC, it's estimated that Quito's metro has 3.1 million residents .. compared to the number in metro Guayaquil, which is about 6,000 shy of 3 million.

Because of The Situation, there was no in-person census in 2020 .. and INEC's numbers are estimates.

The population of Cuenca, still number-three in metro population, is 718,000. That's 187,000 more than shown by the census of 2010. Cuenca thus is the fastest growing city in La República.

Quito and the Big G have each been growing in population by one percent a year over the past decade.
