Well, I believe that's kind-a sort-of true.

But it seems to me it also cuts down on free spam advertising; even posts from legitimate businesses.

If there wasn't that rule, then people would be bypassing the property lists and the job lists and just posting their email address for things they are supposed to advertise using the proper forum tools.

I'm only mentioning this because the reply from forum members to this is often that people on The forum are adults and that they should be able to decide what's a risk and what isn't a risk.

I actually kind of agree with that.

But I also think the forum is not intended as an advertising outlet.

I've got to guess that Julien feels the same way...

:) Yes there has always been email harvesting software that plucks email needles out of haystacks of webpages. And the emails are sold to product spammers.

I think the main reason for the rule is to keep the spammers out of here. Would anyone use the site if it was full of viagra ads? Thank you mods for "protecting" my time from being wasted.  :top:

On an exceptionally low day, I delete half a dozen spam and scam posts before most members see them.  On a very bad day, the number can go up to 40 or 50.  There were a few weeks last year when I had to keep the site open on my laptop my entire waking hours in order to remove the bad stuff as soon as they arrived.

The mods step in when they have time, but due to the duties they must perform, plus their weekend off and the time zone difference, they only see a fraction of the spam and scam posts I see on the VN and USA forums  (I can only speak of the two countries in my responsibility, can't testify for other forums.)

Some members said the site should leave them to deal with what they want to see and what they want to ignore.  Believe me, that will go old very, very, very quickly, and I'm not saying it in a condescending way.  I'll not share with you what those posts are, but I'll say Viagra ads are harmless comparing to the other stuff.  This site will go under within weeks if the power that be allows spammers and scammers to post whatever they want.

So, when I ask a newbie not to post his/her personal contact info, it's because: 1/ it's against the forum's regulation; and 2/ I don't want to watch spammers and scammers taking advantage of said newbie.

Your personal contact info has already been deleted, but your post stays unless you no longer want to find people for language exchange.

Yes, I'm trying to delete the post, because I don't want any more misunderstandings.

You didn't do anything wrong and your post didn't cause any misunderstanding.  It's just some members not wanting the site to restrict personal contact numbers to be posted because they think members should have the right to decide for themselves what they want to see.

Keep your post the way that is, you may find someone wanting to do language exchange with you.  You don't need to be on the forum all the time to read the replies.  When you registered, you gave the site your email address, so if someone sends you a message using the PM system or replying to your post, you'll be notified via your email.  Don't fret, OK?
