Car Rental Agency Requiring credit card with embossed numbers??

Post new topic

MA22

I recently completed a car rental in Joao Pessoa for January through Priceline.  They contracted it out to Rentalcars.com.  Only AFTER I completed the transaction, does it state in the requirements that the local car Rental Agency, Movida, will only accept Credit cards that are embossed(raised numbers); no debit cards, no prepaid cards, no cash.   ALL my card now are chipped and have no embossed numbers on any of them.  Banks here don't make them anymore.

Does anyone have experience with this? I would hate to have to try to re-book something now, as the prices went way up since I reserved the car a week ago.  I would also hate to arrive and NOT be able to pick up the car I already paid for and reserved months in advance.  Not sure  what to do.

Advice?

Thank you!

My new Capital One credit card has no embossing and no permanent numbers, even on the back. My name is cheaply printed on the front.  The card does not have a magnetic strip, just a chip and no one is wanting it.

MA22,
Look into a visa prepaid credit card. Many get these for their children for the limits they choose.

Here's what is stated on the confirmation from Priceline/Rentalcars.com:

Credit or Debit Card
Cash and Debit cards are not accepted.

Accepted Credit Cards
American Express

MasterCard

Visa

Diners Club

Please Note:
This company will not accept prepaid, recharge or virtual credit cards – or any card on which the relevant characters are not raised (‘embossed’).

Thoughts?

I got nothing. I have 2 cards that I use in Brazi that have no FTF. One is embossed and one not. I used non embossed just last week at Localiza while the car was in the shop.
They are having Black Friday here on rentals.

Even though that is a good thing (I myself use it regularly), it probably won’t be accepted. In my case, they charged the rental fee plus a ‘reserve’ that was reimbursed once I had brought back the car. If there had been damages that I would have had to pay for, they would have used this reserve. I doubt that they can do that with a prepaid card.

_______________
I personally have never heard of a rental car company accepting any debit or prepaid card for either payment or deposit.  For example, while I know this is not in Brazil when I return to the USA as I do a few times a year, I use Enterprise Rental at the airport in Tacoma Wa. to rent a car for the drive home.  Here is their policy:

"Debit/check cards are any non-credit cards bearing the VISA, Mastercard® or Discover logo. Pre-paid cards or any other non-credit card without one of these logos are not accepted. Discover not accepted in Canada."

Thanks everyone-   I already know they wont accept pre-paid debit or credit cards.  What I'm really trying to find out now is if they really will not accept my credit card without the embossed (raised) numbers.  None of my cards have these anymore...  Only chips with imprinted numbers...

Did they end up accepting your card? I have this same dilemma.

Dont worry no one will require this, I hired sever6 cars from movida and localiza with cards without raised nimbers in the last 3 months. Brazil has lots of rules that are ignored
