@Julien I would like to live in the Dominican Republic a few months out of the year in the future.  I am 61.  I practice law.  I love being active.  My children are grown and I am single.

Welcome to the Forums!  My wife are doing exactly as you want to do.

We obtained DR residency with the help of Abrogada Lishali Baez (she also goes by Lilly).  Do a search on the site for her contact info.

>> We HIGHLY recommend Lishali.  She rescued our application after another lawyer bollixed it all up.

As far as where you snowbird -- take your time and try multiple locations before you decide on a long-term location.

My strongest advice is to be VERY aware of local proclivities.  Some neighborhoods and resorts are party central, with lots of VERY loud music at all hours.

If you don't mind the noise, that's fine.  But if you do, be sure to verify the nose situation before you ink a contract, not after.

Best

Jim

Hello,

I have just retired and I live in Northern California. I met a young man on a dating site which gave me the opportunity to visit your country. Not sure of his true intentions but with this forum I hope to learn a lot.

Hello everyone, I am Ivana, I am Serbian and my husband is Dominican. I've already lived in DR for about half a year in 2016. Now in France, but with the possibility that a job takes us to DR. This is why I want to explore more, as times have changed, and also this time we would go to a different location (Las Galeras probably this time). So, for anyone having advice about Las Galeras I am reading! For specific questions, I will post in dedicated forum topics.

Was it the long comments that “trashed” all things in the Dominican Republic 🇩🇴? If it was I read the Manifesto and concluded it that was his experience I will respect his opinion. That being said, my experience is 180 degrees from his. I looked for the good in people and I found it. I could write a 1000 words on the good I found.  Lastly please I understand I am  no snow flake or goodie two shoes. I volunteer in a prison and work with men who have committed some of the worst crimes ever. Yet I know the difference better bad people and bad acts. The Dominican Republic is a beautiful place with an overwhelming amount of people who do the right thing.  Love to all

@Julien New to the forum. I'd been to the DR many, many times years ago but my travels had taken me elsewhere. I'm planning on returning at some point. I've backpacked all over the world, including South America, Europe and Thailand. I've played the piano, both classical and standard in many places in America, as well as other countries and had done numerous piano competitions as well. I'm sure the DR's changed and I'm eager to learn as much as I can from the helpful posts here on the forum.

Hello all.

My wife is from the DR and we live near Toronto. We bought a house in Cabarete [already built] and we take possession at the end of October. We are looking to buy household items in Canada and ship them. We need 4 wall mounted AC, four ceiling fans, an electric system to open the car gate and a security system.

Are we better to bring these items from Canada or to find the items and installation in the DR? Do we have  to pay taxes on what we bring in? My wife of course is a resident and I will have my DR residency?

Thanks for all the help.

Hi everyone!

My story is probably a familiar one...I'm a 100% disabled veteran looking to gain a little more leverage on my fixed income. I've read up on the Philippines, Costa Rica, and Dominican Republic mainly, with the DR currently feeling like the best option.

I'm currently located near North Carolina's Outer Banks, and visited Haiti in 2004 (though I didn't get to explore or enjoy much). Maybe this makes DR feel more realistic to me.

I'm honestly just getting started with all this, but I need a total change and the more I hear the more reasonable it feels.

The information and energy in this forum went a long way to solidifying this decision, so I signed up and stopped to say hi. Hearing from real people that have made it happen and are living it cuts right through the uncertainty of it all, which is SO helpful!

Anyway, nice to meet you all, and I look forward to making this place a regular part of my relocation.

@Julien

Hello all

My wife and i came here to the north coast in 1991 as tourists.

In the same year i came back to found our first company cause at that time as a stranger only allowed to purchase up to 2000 sqm.

So we bought 95 acres of stunning ocean view property where we started to work as pioneers of eco tourism.

Now, 31 years later we decided to sell parts of our property.  20.000 to 250.000 sqm land apted for a ocean view villas project or an eco hotel up on the hill.
