The best age to move to Portugal

Post new topic

Cheryl

Hello everybody,

No two people experience expatriation in Portugal in the same way, depending on their age and personal situation. We would like to know more about you and ask you to share with us when you decided to move to Portugal.

How old were you when you moved to Portugal? Did you go alone or with your family?

In your opinion, was it the right time to move there?

Do you find this country welcoming for your age group or for certain categories in particular? Why or why not?

Are there any incentives (financial aid, lower taxes, etc.) and for which category of expats?

In your opinion, is there an ideal age to move to Portugal?

Thank you for your contribution!

I am so happy that I moved from Quebec, Canada when I turned sixty.

Canada is a beautiful country, but the taxes in Quebec are some of the highest in the world, and in Portugal, I finally get a bit of a break from that.

Also, as Quebec has a reciprocal agreement with Portugal, I was able to register with the health service here.

The weather is beautiful and I can run on the beach every day, instead of worrying about weather it is too icy outside!

Love it here, and it certainly did not take me long to fit in.... feels like home :)

I arrived in Portugal at age 54 without the need to look for a job in Portugal. Even after a few years in Portugal I think that it was a good choice, especially for an EU citizen. There are (and/or have been) incentives like the good command of English in the polulation and interesting tax options plus the good weather.

Hi, there is no best age to move to Portugal, it depends a lot on your goals and expectations.....I was 65 years old when I arrived in Portugal with my Visa D7 for retired brazilians. I chose Algarve because of the beauty of nature......but if you need to work it's better to go to big cities like Lisbon, Porto, Braga, Coimbra, etc. The only thing that really annoys me a lot here in Portugal is their national health system that it is so bad, and the private is very expensive. I hope that my opinion has helped you in some way. Xxx

Olá Gisele,

I would like you to clarify why the national health system is "so bad" ... and particularly if compared with the brazilian one...
In my opinion is much better than the private system. The private system has only one advantage: the specialty consultations are much faster to get. There are good and bad professionals in both systems. And I know what I'm talking about...

We moved from San Francico to Portugsl in October 2019.  I was 77 and my wife 65 years old.  We had been travelling to Portugal for about 5 years before the move move.  During these trips we decided Portugal would be a great retirement country.

Tre main reasons we chose Portugal are:
1.  Climate, great warm weather
2.  Fewer people, less stress and traffic
3.  Safety
4.  Culture of the country
5.  Lower costs for many items I e. Healthcare, medical and prescription cost.
6.  Great people, they make you feel welcome
7.  Great, less crowded beaches
8.  Many community and city parks for the people..
9.  Great museums and culture centres
10.  Little or no racial tension issues
11.Ease of getting a resident certificate with EU passport
12. Ease of travel to other EU countries
13.  Great market places
