Hi,

I am starting Zoom lessons online to learn Portuguese, ad am wondering if anyone else can let me know if they have tried online learning and whether they learned Portuguese.

Also, perhaps post links?

Obrigada!

I’m doing Pimsleur & like it because it’s all conversation - how much do you charge??

Obrigada,

I did online course A1 level Português para estrangeiros in the faculty of letras / universidade de lisboa (4 months/4 days a week). It is not easy, lots to comprehend. But I found it very beneficial. then I studied alone at home the whole portuguese grammar  in summer time then I registered A2 level course but in class. These classes tend to be very difficult and the teachers are too demanding! ... but I benefited a lot not necessarily grammatically but in terms of practicing the language on real life situations with people ... remember that writing in português is different than speaking because in speaking there is no time to think hhh

My problem was always in understanding what people say ... I find this book quite helpful with this regard, it benefited me so much. Dialogar em português por Helena Lemos (níveis A1-A2)

Recently, I checked that Camões centre offers português courses online, each nível lasts 2 months ...

I would like to learn as well Lori if you can possibly share zoom link info. I have studied Italian via Duolingo and Rosetta Stone and found the format a bit juvenile and just okay

Not sure if it will let us post links in here or not, but I have worked with the same teacher André on italki for over a year. I live in Lisbon, but he is in the Porto area and we have done Zoom lessons since I was still in the US.

I went through several teachers before finally sticking with him. He is super reliable, patient, and also gives assignments which helps with learning.

Hope this helps!

Hi LorieAnneC

That’s great to hear that you’re learning Portuguese. My demanding toddler won’t let me do anything apart from concentrate on HIM, otherwise I have had the same on my mind but can’t book in online sessions just yet....

I’ve found tutors on Preply and Italki and teaching can be done 1 on 1 on zoom or directly on the platforms. The cheapest I found for European Portuguese was about £7 per hour - a nice Portuguese lady who is based in the U.K. and speaks English fluently.

Brazilian is a lot cheaper.

Otherwise there’s the option of just downloading a chat app and chatting to natives; a bit like the old days at school when we had pen pals in France and schools would exchange written letters.  I haven’t tried this as I’m not sure how effective it’s going to be and whether it’s worth it at all. It doesn’t sound like I’m going to learn much on this type of platform as the native is there to practice their English too. HelloTalk and Tandem advertise are examples.

Good luck and I can’t wait to start learning too!

@LorieAnneC After some research I have tried Duolingo and Babble, spending about 6 months (daily, for at least 30-40 minutes) on Duolingo largely to get a start on vocabulary and basic listening skills to develop an 'ear' for a new language.

The major issue: Neither of these common and user-friendly systems actually offer Portuguese, but only offer Brazilian Portuguese.  Needless to say the pronunciation is different, and as I have noticed simplify verbs from the way the Portuguese speak the language.

In short: It is a useful tool to get started and build some understanding of the language and vocabulary, but at the end of the day I think one has to practice through conversations. It would be great to have 'local lessons' (I am in Tomar), but I am sure that well structured  Zoom conversations would be a benefit.

To make matters a little more complicated for me at least is that I am in Portugal usually for a week or two every 2 months, so as I think my ear is tuning in it is time to leave again.....

Would be interested to hear what your options are with regards learning?

Hola,

I'm French.

I chose duolingo. It's in English and it's free.

To begin, it's easy

@Gentleman_H  thank you, I might try it! Do you have enough knowledge after a A1 if you already have knowledge of the basic Portuguese? Thanks in advance

@LorieAnneC. I've been trying to learn Portuguese since I got Portugal. I am very much interested to start this course.

Gentleman_H

@omniaM. A1 provided me with more knowledge while A2 served for extending and or practicing that knowledge of A1. That is what I felt.

@williamstony360 Buy this book Dialogar em português por Helena Lemos. It benefited me a lot when it comes to Audição (listening)

Memrise is a good app that teaches European Portuguese and also includes movie clips with real Portuguese speakers to get you to understand the normal spoken language. I find it really helpful. I can also recommend the podcast Portuguese with Carla (also on YouTube).

@papion I spent 4 months learning with Duolingo, only to discover that it is Brazilian Portuguese.  Since then, I've discovered Memrise, which seems to be good so far.  Here is a link memrise.com/

@omniaM.

I have really just begun, so I cannot say how effective it will be.

I cannot share the Zoom link, but it is Portuguese with Antonio.

Hi, my name is Paula.

This is the first time I write on this or any forum actually so I hope I don't go against any group rules unintentionally.

I occasionally come on briefly to see if there is any information that can help with my situation but as I read everyone's comments it makes me wonder if I can possibly be of help to anyone with learning or practicing the Portuguese language.

About me: I am a Portuguese Canadian. Fluent in both Portuguese and English. Born in Portugal, I have been in Canada for many years.  I have lived and worked in Portugal and often go back and forth to look after my parents.

I am planning to relocate to Portugal to find care for my parents while I overlook and help them but I will need a job.

I wonder if I can possibly be of any help in the practicing of every day conversation of the Portuguese language to anyone.

To make it clear, I am not a teacher. Please give me your feedback, suggestions, comments of how and if I can contribute both to helping anyone or also myself.

Thank you for your time in reading my first comments and hope everyone finds all they are looking for in their move to Portugal.

Looking forward to hearing from you

I would recommend learning Portuguese with the Camoes Institute. The have all types of courses and can issue certificates as well.

Hi Paula, Welcome.

You can join Portuguese-English speaking groups to network yourself and help other people with these languages. There are some of these groups on Meetup.

Much appreciated,
