Typhoon Noru hits Philippines, thousands evacuated as fierce rains and wind batter region
The typhoon abruptly gained strength in an "explosive intensification" as it blew closer to the north-eastern Philippines
The powerful typhoon slammed into the north-eastern Philippines and is barrelling across the main Luzon island toward the capital, in a densely populated path where thousands have been evacuated to safety.
Typhoon Noru hit the coastal town of Burdeos on Polillo Island in Quezon province shortly before nightfall.
With sustained winds of 195 kilometres per hour and gusts of up to 240 kph, it was expected to weaken slightly when it hits the Sierra Madre mountain range but will remain dangerously ferocious, forecasters said.
The typhoon gained considerable strength from a storm with sustained winds of 85 kph on Saturday into a super typhoon just 24 hours later in an "explosive intensification" over the open sea, Vicente Malano, who heads the country's weather agency said.
On Sunday, authorities began evacuating thousands of people from coastal areas on Luzon, where the capital, Manila, is located.
Key points:
Thousands of people have been evacuated from coastal areas on Luzon, the Philippines's largest and most populous island
Authorities say communication lines are severed and the power is out in some communities
The government suspended school and work for Monday, while flights and ferry services were cancelled

Stay safe everyone, especially southern Luzon. It always concerns me a little when a typhoon hits. In some media reports Noru is a "Super Typhoon" while in other later ones it's a "tropical storm". Thanks for the post P1.

My wife didn't sleep at all last night worrying about the Typhoon (Metro Manila) B.J. Thomas: "Raindrops keep fallin' on my head.
What kept me up, besides my prostrate, was the constant ringing of my phone with the typhoon latest warnings that did not affect me.
@Enzyte Bob suggest turning off notifications at night... if worried... set an alarm to wake and check yourself...
Obviously we are all Hoping for the tropical storm... and not the "super Typhoon" 🙏
Seams to me Philippines likes to make a mountain out of a molehill alot... maybe for good reason, and/or because of the past. But it is never good in my book to cry wolf every time... Just watch, be diligent with prep for yourself and family... and go with the flow. Be safe Everyone! (:

On the BBC News last night, I think they classed it a Super Typhoon. They also covered Storm Fiona in Canada where I saw images of properties washed away, just total destruction. I hope everybody is safe both in The Philippines or Canada.

When the typhoon first entered the Philippines, it was classified as a Super Typhoon. Initially, it was predicted that Metro Manila will experience Category-4 winds (Typhoon Signal #4). Fortunately for us, the typhoon weakened when it made landfall. But still, the winds were strong, like a Typhoon Signal #2, for around 4 hours, starting around 8pm. Coastal areas were the worst hit.
Our house is safe and our area doesn't get flooded. We are well-stocked. We haven't had the need or had been required to evacuate our area due to a typhoon. But we still made sure that our go-bags are updated and ready to go just in case. We filled our gas tanks to full, put a bit of load on our kids' and our housekeeper's prepaid cellphone accounts.
By Monday morning, the typhoon had passed and it was bright and sunny, the winds were still.

A big Hurricane is heading towards Florida. The shelves are emptying fast, people are stocking up for a Hurricane Party.
Why don't Filipino's stock up Red Horse, Fundador, Ligo Sardines and Spam?

Omo....In this backwater province where I reside, there is really not much the locals can afford to stock up other than maybe gallon loads of tap water/a few tins of the cheaper mariko brand sardine tins; a small sack of rice & maybe some biscuits & not forgetting a few packs of lucky mee.
Since you asked I just completed my Alcohol Stock up today (being amongst the previlaged few here)
1 carton of Emerador Light in it were 8x1 litre bottles of Emerador Light with 8 small bottles of lime mixers) which cost 1354p
1 carton of Tanduay Rum Dark Blend in it were 12x1 litres bottles which cost 1638p.
....Btw Singapore Securities SGX just welcomed the secondary listing of Emperador Inc. With its estimated market capitalisation of S$7.3 billion.
I reckon an excellent share to hold for the long term.

I read "The Long Emergency" by James Kunstler. It's the ultimate doomsday guide, and advises how to survive a SHTF scenario when the 21st C turns nasty. He advocates a good supply drinking water etc (as mentioned above) and also non-perishable items that can be either consumed or traded. A bottle of rum or a tin of spam might be exchanged for labor, or a kg of fresh fish.
If things don't turn out so bad, drink the rum. ("Hurricane Party")
Well wishes to those connected to the events in Florida.
Yes do stay safe & best wishes to those facing these tumultuous times.
Hello all,
That sounds terrifying.....
Stay safe and do keep us updated on the situation there.
All the best,

Filipinos don't stock up on those items because those get consumed way before the hurricane / storm / typhoon arrives.

My post was sent in jest, I didn't realize some people would take it seriously.
But in the states on occasion you would see these things prior to the Hurricane making landfall.
(1) Lines of cars waiting to get gas on their trek north.
(2) Hardware stores sold out of generators and plywood, store owners boarding up their windows.
(3) Some poor weather man reporting while outside and the cameraman inside.
(4) Interstate Highways with the inbound lanes converted to out bounds to handle traffic.
(5) Every TV station tracking and trying to predict the storm path days in advance.
(6) Fools organizing Hurricane parties in beach front high rise condos. (on tv)
(7) People making Youtube videos.
(8) People abandoning their pets.
(9) People surfing before the hurricane hits.
(10) People planning to go to Walmart while the storm is raging for more beer & chips.
(11) People staying home in their mobile home or caravan drinking a beer.
Side note: While in the states my wife was always on the phone with the family talking to her family. My question was always the same: What's happening in the Philippines?
I she always would say a typhoon is coming. I've never experienced mother nature except for a snow storm here or there. So I'm thinking I'm going to experience a typhoon. Now for four years from time to time I'm warned of a typhoon is on the way. I guess I'm lucky not to have experienced it.
Being in Metro Manila I haven't seen the lifestyle that people go through, day to day in the provinces.
Sometimes it's best to STOP talking about resilience....I've seen enough suffering 1st hand here in my backwater province.
An article in Forbes.com thinks so too.

The last one is my favorite Filipino song. It starts with an Elton John-like piano solo in the beginning and builds up to a full orchestra as the song progresses.
