Phu Quoc - The reality of life with a young child?

It is absolutely beautiful, speaking strictly from an aesthetic point of view. Reminded me a bit of my hometown.

Brightly coloured buildings, art deco mixed with Romanesque style. Cobblestone streets, daily garbage collection, a sea view to die for. The streets are winding, and undulate over gentle hillocks. Well planned out.

But for me, the best of all is that it is only a 20 minute walk to the old An Thoi. I feel much more comfortable, and much more at home (as much as that is possible in VN) there than in the newer development.

But that's just me and the way I roll

I have visited this island a couple of times and I can tell you there are worse places to be. Phu quoc is supposed to have the cleanest air in Vietnam and as a tourist destination it is one of the cleanest places i have visited.

Your kid is a baby so you don't need to worry about schools . I wouldn't hesitate to move there at all

@KirstyJ82 Hi Kirsty, not sure if you ended up making the move or not? We are from NZ & looking at relocating to Vietnam for a year or so some time at the beginning of 2024. Just starting to look into visas etc - If you did end up moving - Is it easy enough to extend the visa once you're there? I can only seem to find info on 3 month visas. Any info will be much appreciated!

You have probably been only to expensive resorts on PQ. PQ is nice but it has to do bit of work, like stopping  idiots burning trash every evening, just for fun.  I have seen people close to better hotels burning trash too.

Are you settled in Phu Quoc now? My intention is to create a Franco/Anglo/Vietnamese cultural center with the aim of caring for the children of expatriates. My daughter celebrated her 3rd birthday in Phu Quoc, and she lost her French a lot while playing with the little Vietnamese!

You should count yourself lucky.   Keep speaking French at home and she won't lose it.   At the same time she is learming conversational Vietnamese.   (You can worry about learning to write Vietnamese later.).   If she stays in a bilingual environment for a few more years (5-7 year old), she could remain bilingual for life and be one of the rare persons with truly two L1.
