Travelling To The Philippines

Post new topic

Last time I flew to the Philippines I came back to the UK via HCMC, where I spent a few days.  The flights were a combination of airlines including KLM, Air France and Philippine Airlines and booked through Sky Scanner or Kayak which then took me to Jetabroad to finish the process. Since my booking was not with the Airlines direct I did incur additional charges for seat reservation and maybe baggage allowance.

I am now looking to go again but this time I want to stop off for a few days in Da Nang, fly onto Kuala Lumpa and then onto Cebu. I tried searching on Sky scanner and Kayak again and found fares and the airlines involved seem to be Emirates, Air Asia, Scoot and Vietnam Airlines. I was just wondering if anybody knows if booking third party means I would need to pay for checked baggage and seat reservations with Emirates. I did try using the Emirates site to book the trip but it was not very good and let me enter my preferred flights then said one was not available but would not give me the option to change days because I could not see which flight was not available,

I would think the baggage allowance would be the same class for class. Airlines are now charging for seat reservations depending on the type of ticket but some seats do not incur charges and of course this varies from carrier to carrier. I suppose economists would call it 'yield maximisation'. Call Emirates reservations and they can give you a definitive answer.

All being said cherryann you will have flown (after your proposed trip) 65K of airmiles within the past year or so and to keep switching airlines is plain daft. By sticking to either KLM (which I realise is convenient for Bradford) or one of the big Arabian Gulf super carriers like Emirates the airmiles accrued would be valuable either as cash or upgrades not to mention the benefits that being a member of their frequent flyer scheme bring - extra luggage (pasalubong ;) ) lounge access & free upgrades when tourist class (coach to our American friends) is full.

Yes but I was actually looking at flying from Manchester this time. There is a direct flight from there to Dubai with Emirates. Flying from Leeds/Bradford involves or can involve up to 4 stops, or so my searches are saying and some warn of having to transfer airports or go through the whole security/immigration process again. Also the duration is in excess of 30 hours for the outward or return flight.

Best of luck my friend, for your travel and Holidays. Maybe a few visits to a bar or two might be in order to make up for you know what.

When you arrive, maybe we can plan to meet up for a drink or dinner if you've got some time in Manila or up north in Clark/Angeles!

Thank you very much and I will take you up on your offer if I am in the Manila area. Regarding a few visits to the bar, I am lucky that my English daughter is home from Uni now so am looking forward to spending some time with her.

I used to use discounters until I needed help, and customer service was non existent.

Mostly book direct with airlines

Sage advice.

By all means utilise travel tools such as Skyscanner to plan your trip but ultimately you are better off booking directly with the airline.

The problem I have with that is that when I log into my Emirates Account and select Advanced Search/Multi City, I put in where I want to go so in this case - Manchester to Kuala Lumpa then onto Da Nang, from there to Cebu and return to Manchester. Options come up for different classes of flight, Economy, Business Class, etc and I choose a flight that it says is available from Manchester to KL, then choose one it says is available from KL to Da Nang. Then I get a message in red saying (Sorry, no flights available on this date, please try again with a different date). It does not tell me which of the two flights is not available and says they are both available before I make my choice. So I find the Emirates website very difficult to use or make any sense of when booking a multi city trip.

that's because you're picking legs that the carrier doesn't have routes too. Had you picked that city as final destination, and the carrier doesn't go there, say Cebu, but goes to Manila, then Emirates would book the associated last carrier for you. Multi city through the carrier needs to be cities they go to.

Yes Larry is correct in his analysis. The fun of using airline search engines!

Why not spend a couple of days in KL, beat the jetlag, then a return flight to Da Nang with Air Asia. From Kuala Lumpur, careful with the spelling of Lumpur Cherryann ;) to Cebu via Singapore with Scoot. If you fly to Cebu from Da Nang Singapore Airlines will fleece you with one stopover but even 2 stops are exorbitant!

I flew Emirates to KL (from Heathrow) back in the late 90’s and then it went via Dhaka (2 stops). I note the Manchester flight just has the one stop. The 20.40 flight uses the spacious A380 with only a 2 hour layover in Dubai. Perfect connection timings :)

Thank you Larry, what you say and the way you explained it does make sense. However, I would have thought that a major airline like Emirates, with it's IT Specialists would have been able to make this clearer. Instead of offering me the flight and saying it is available and then telling me to try using different dates, surely they have the capability to display a message that makes sense. Maybe something like "Our airline does not fly to some of the destinations you have requested, please ring for assistance or "our airline cannot complete your booking, please check our route map".

I seem to remember that the Emirates flight back from Cebu to Manchester makes an additional stop at Clark Airport or at least it did on my first ever visit to the Philippines when I flew Manchester to Cebu (Return). This said, passengers travelling on to Dubai were not required to get off in Clark, merely sit there awaiting for passengers to disembark and embark.
