My husband and I are American and have been living in the southwest of France full-time for the past four years--before that France was a secondary home for 30 years.
We are seriously considering leaving France and moving to Portugal. We now have our home for sale.
Knowing the intricacies of making the transition to another country, we are very interested to short-cut the time and effort to learn everything on our own. So, we are grateful for this community in sharing their experiences.
Our interests include getting visas (D7), finding the right place to live which compliments our priorities, the healthcare system, and learning the language. We know the importance of being able to communicate well in the native language after learning to speak French while living here.
We are both retired entrepreneurs who now live on a walnut farm in France wanting to be closer to an urban environment but not necessarily right in the middle of it after living on this 8 hectaire farm. I am looking forward to being in this community and meeting many of you.
Hi @gurneykathleendr, Welcome.
There is a link here about sharing visa experiences, some are from US expats. You can use the search facility to search for a topic, or open a new thread, so that members can help you.

I often run into people here who can speak French but not English, so while of course it's no substitute for learning Portuguese, your French may still be a little useful here.
Thank you, JohnnyPT and donn25, your suggestions are very helpful

Does anyone recommend using a visa agent to get retirement visa?
Hello! after 7 months in Porto, I've now moved to my new home in Nazare. I found this platform by chance and decided to join. I'm a Uruguayan and Italian citizen and have been living abroad for many years (more than two decades now) I have an online shop in the U.S. and a YouTube travel channel, and I'm always on the lookout for things to do and learn.
Cheers!
Marcelo

I suggest you contact expats from Australia, New Zealand or other countries. Maybe someone will reply and help you. If any member wishes to share this information with you, please feel free to do so. There are cases here of expats who have done everything themselves:

I'm Rick Tarkowski. I'm an American moving to Portugal on a D-7 visa. I hope. I have a rental contract and 2 different sources of private medical insurance. Those two tasks seem to be the most difficult. But we shall see.
