Emigration to Portugal with children, where to go?

Dear community-members,

My family (wife and 3 children) and I want to move to Portugal. We want to move to the Lisbon or setubal district. We're looking for an affordable place close to the beach and in the proximity of grocery stores and good (Portuguese) schools for our children (currently all under the age of 3). Furthermore we would like to live somewhere that's not full of tourists during the high season and a “ghost town” during the off season.

Can you please give us some advice about good towns to look for a place? Or tips how we can identify a good place to build a life with our children?

Based on our search on the internet (because we currently can't visit Portugal, because of COVID), we're thinking about Costa da Caparica or Aroeira. Does anyone can give us some feedback about these towns or advise other places to look for?

Many Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,
Jorge

Hi Jorge, Welcome :)

The answer depends on where you and your wife need to go on a daily basis.
Whether you both need to go to Lisbon and what kind of transport both of you usually use for that purpose.

Costa da Caparica is very busy between June and September because it is a popular beach destination in the summer. Aroeira is mainly a residential area, made up of villas and few buildings, but close to the sea as well. A part of Aroeira is a closed condominium with villas and two golf courses.

There are schools and shops close by in both areas. The main problem is more the traffic in the summer. If you need to drive to Lisbon on a daily basis, these are not good options. But there is a good train to the centre of Lisbon nearby:

Bom Dia Jorge.  We moved here in octobet 2019 from the USA.  we are living in Belas a small community about 13 kilometere NW of Lisbon.  We are looking at houses on the northwest from Cascais to Coimbra and find this an interesting area.   Wr find Mafra, Ericeria and the Silver Coast very interesting.  These cities are about 45 ninutes to Lisbon. We are using a real estate agents - very helpful.  I can share their contact information if you are interested.  Good luck.  I am sure you will like Portugal.

In Belas there is also "Belas Clube de Campo" / Lisbon Green Valley:

(video available in portuguese ...)

After all there is available both site & video in English  :)https://www.belasclubedecampo.pt/?lang=en

Hi, where from the USA did you emigrate from.  We are from Canada, just bought a condo in Nazare, Silver Coast looking forward to be able to travel again.  Plan on retiring in Nazare, love this place and also the proximity to Lisbon.

Thanks for the feedback.

Daily commute to Lisbon is not required since I'll be able to work from home. However, this might change in the future (you never know for sure), so having a good connection by car or train to city center of Lisbon will be interesting. For us being close to beautiful sandy beaches is also very important.

@Dan Plute If you're happy about the real estate agents you may definitely share their contact details. Right now we're mainly searching via idealista and green-acres until we can travel again to Portugal.

Therefore and taking into account of being close to the beach, these may be good options:

- West of Lisbon:
Carcavelos, Oeiras, Cascais, Santo Amaro, Caxias, Birre, Parede, ...

- South of Lisbon:
Santo António da Caparica (Costa da Caparica), Aroeira, Verdizela, Azeitão, ...

@JorgeB11 have you chosen where to settle? Made your move? :)

It might be an excellent idea to automatically close threads after a defined period of time. Maybe after a year or to it will be better to open a new thread.
