A Glitch .. By Francisco S. Tatad January 9, 2023

AN unexplained power blackout shut down the nation's civil aviation system for at least five hours on New Year's Day, a Sunday, causing the cancellation of some 400 international and domestic commercial flights and stranding some 60,000 passengers of various nationalities in the country.
They called it a "glitch," which means a minor dysfunction in the Air Traffic Management Center (ATMC) that controls the country's airspace outside of individual airports' control zones.
But no thorough investigation has been conducted to discount the possibility of sabotage or cyber attack.
One group blames the Communications, Navigation and Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) system for being too "old," meaning at least four years old, but another group blames everything on pure stupidity and incompetence, for plugging the 220-volt system into a 380-volt power line ...
The glitch in the CNS/ATM system is bad. In a parliamentary system, the minister in charge of civil aviation would have immediately resigned after the shutdown. The prime minister would at least be answering questions in parliament .. Not so in our system.

ATC is a backup dream. You name it there is a backup for it, so why did it go out?
There is definitely something bigger happening

To be clear, I mean a massive cock up by some idiot on a porn site letting a virus in, maybe leading to a hack job for ransom.
Plugging in to the wrong voltage might do it, but it would take massive acts of multiple idiocy to manage that.
I have experience as an operations manager at a major US airport. We had numerous backups to restore power in a blackout or commercial power failure. Anyone with knowledge will tell you that air travel supports a country’s economy. The power failure to both the airport itself as well as the radar facility is un believably poor planning, negligence or criminal activity. I cannot support any of those hypothetical issues, just stating what is obvious to me.
An investigation by an honest committee is required!

We like a sense of humour on this Forum Scott 😉
Ninoy Aquino International has form. Only relatively recently the U.S safety regulator the FAA and IATA ( airline professional body) were advising passengers coming to Manila of deficiencies in the airports safety standards.
I flew out with Cebu Pacific to Jakarta in mid Nov ‘22 and the pilot used the shorter runway which bisects the main runway.
An accident waiting to happen?
Yeah, I was just about to post that but you beat me to it, Fred.
Definitely not one-off now.. wonder who's behind it?

I have no real idea, but I have been reading that hacking forum.
The people on there have amazing skills, and our inglorious political and business leaders should be very afraid.
Even if this has nothing to do with hackers, plenty more events are direct results of their 'fun'.
For us lowly prols at the bottom of the pile, all we can do is use hard to crack passwords and never put credit card details anywhere on the internet. Names, addresses, passwords, and credit card details from several shopping sites are out there to buy - same hackers even give databases away for free.
Also - If you have home wifi, make sure it has a killer password. I tried cracking my local coffee shop passwords with software available on the hacker forum - it worked several times.
Airlines the world over would love to blame hackers when their CRS (Computer Reservation Systems) go down and sometimes they 'infer' that this is the case. 95% of the time its because of their own incompetence. My 'illustrious' national carrier British Airways has had several computer outages in the last few years and the reason was they have failed to upgrade their software systems.
Perhaps with the price gouging airfares now being levied they can get their act together? - don't hold your breath.
May I suggest: C H I N A, the elephant herd in the room.....? Watch out for them; I'm sure they are eyeing some great Tourist Destination land in the Philippines (If they've not already started buying up chunks of it). Logic would suggest Php is ripe for accepting offers for such land. But then the gov't doesn't allow foreigners to own land there, so that's Good, right? Only up to the point when the offer gets too high to resist or reaches the right person....... ( ). which incidentally is happening all too often to USA farmland owners, so now we have Chinese ownership of US farmland--over 150,000 acres of it--some of it next door to our Military installations: Sooo Inclusive, so Equitable, fair, Affirming, etc.., Cool, huh? I'm sure our P r ea S uh dunce y will save the day..... Think?
@TitoDan The PH govts constitution does not allow foreigners (namely americans) to buy n own land, unless it's China! But in USA they allow any
Foreigner to buy as much as they want..so, as Americans were screwed either way!
@TitoDan Since when can foreigners buy land in the Philippines?.
I think this applies to Chiinese citizens also.
@Lotus Eater There were issues in Great Britain a few years ago closing down an airport, They blamed it on a recreational drone. but was never located. leads me to think it was a glitch in their software and blamed a drone to avoid all the lawsuits etc.
There was just an issue in the U.S..Thousands of delays and cancellations.https://sputniknews.com/20230113/us-aviation-authority-blames-recent-flight-meltdown-on-personnel-who-failed-to-follow-procedures-1106267372.htmlTypical result of hiring personel based on race and sex instead of merit. For some reason, the Official website by the FAA of the U.S. Government didn't show on the above post. Here it is again:https://www.faa.gov/levelup/toolkit

A Government disease in the United States.
True. Look what happened when the US got a non-white president.
That orange idiot made a rare old mess.
Racism deserves stupid jokes because it is one.
Huh?
Your comnent doesn't make sense.
If you think that pointing out Facts is racism, then you are projecting and shouldn't accuse people of something you know nothing about.
What happened with Obama that you're referring to?
Besides higher Taxes, bigger Government and more killing of civilians overseas by the U.S. military?
Yeah, Trump was/ is a mess.
All of the U. S. Presidents have been a mess.
The U.S. Government is the same, regardless of who is President.
You obviously are not schooled in facts about America, so don't try and pretend, it's very transparent.
BTW, you won't find people blathering nonsense about your little island, not only because it's insignificant but also because it's boorish to talk about a Country which you know nothing about.
Time to go back to your little, insignificant island.

Fred, I'm having a tough time trying to understand what point you're trying to make, please explain.

If I may ask a Question ... why do the US right wing lot go to state owned Russian media for their news?
The most anti-US media in the world, and supposed US patriots love it.
The idiocy is deafening.
My fiancé and I landed at LAX in early August, 2007. We had a string of luck getting us to that point but the luck ran out because the computer system had crashed and we were not allowed to leave the plane for several hours missing our connecting flight to Houston. We caught a later flight and arrived in Houston at day break. The Leyte province girl was able to travel around her first clover leaf in daylight.
Hello all,
It's best if we can return to the original subject of this thread....
Let's not bring the US, media or presidents into this discussion.
Thanks and have a wonderful weekend.

It recently happened in the US ….. no one is immune to a computer glitch

Seems so, but I still have trouble believing people in jobs like that can be so stupid, and there are no backup systems.
@Harbred6051 Hopefully someday the US state department will wise up and apply a reciprocal policy of land ownership. If the Phils does not allow USA citizens to own land, the USA does not allow Filipinos to own land. The same ahould apply to all countries. In China, only the government can own land.
My dad used to say to me: "A bad carpenter blames his tools." Later on (Decades), a family member casually noticed a few of my negative traits, especially Blaming. With a little help, I figured out that blaming is a very damaging trait: It lets us off the hook emotionally, while doing nothing about the root problem; so it's become Job One for me personally to eliminate it. Time is precious and grows more precious with each passing year; why waste it blaming? I respectfully refer us to the Governor of South Dakota's Pandemic efforts as a shining example of doing something instead of sitting, philosophizing, blaming, etc. We need more like her.
