Hello,

I'm writing on behalf of a friend who is currently in Chiang Mai on a tourist visa which expires on the 9th of August but his return is booked on the 23rd.

Can he extend his visa in Chiang Mai or must he cross the border to extend his visa?

Any useful info would be welcome :)

Have a nice day further!

tourist visa  = if he got it upon entry it's an "entry permit" not a visa.

if he has a visa, depends on what type.

presuming it's a 30 day entry permit, he needs to leave thailand and if it's walk in, he gets 14 days, if he flys back in, it's 30 days more.

immigration has the authority to do anything they want, but the above is normally what is expected to happen.

he may have acquired a visa before arriving in thailand, that is 2 months plus 1 more he can add on at immigration by the airport in cm.

easiest route will be to fly to chiang rai and cross the border and come back if he has an entry permit (not a visa)

thanks a bunch for your info, cecco! :)
