US general warns of war with China 'as early as 2025'
The Manila Times & Agence France-Presse, January 28, 2023
A four-star US Air Force general has warned of a conflict with China as early as 2025 –- most likely over Taiwan –- and urged his commanders to push their units to achieve maximum operational battle readiness this year.
In an internal memorandum that first emerged on social media on Friday, and was later confirmed as genuine by the Pentagon, the head of the Air Mobility Command, General Mike Minihan, said the main goal should be to deter "and, if required, defeat" China.
"I hope I am wrong. My gut tells me we will fight in 2025," Minihan said.
Laying out his reasoning, Minihan said Taiwan's presidential elections next year would offer Chinese President Xi Jinping an excuse for military aggression, while the United States would be distracted by its own contest for the White House.
"Xi's team, reason, and opportunity are all aligned for 2025," he added.
The memorandum also calls on all Mobile Command personnel to go to the firing range, "fire a clip" into a target and "aim for the head."
A Pentagon spokesman responded to an AFP email query about the memo saying, "Yes, it's factual that he sent that out."
Senior US officials have said in recent months that China appears to be speeding up its timeframe to seize control of Taiwan, a self-governing democracy claimed by Beijing.
China staged major military exercises in August last year, seen as a trial run for an invasion after a defiant visit of solidarity to Taipei by then House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who at the time was second in line to the White House.
The United States switched recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1979 but sells weapons to Taiwan for its self-defense.
A growing number of US lawmakers have called for ramping up assistance, including sending direct military aid to Taiwan, saying that Russia's invasion of Ukraine underscores the need for early preparation.
Happy trails

its a complicated mess. 1/3 of Philippine liquid fuels is refined fuel from China. Does that give them a little leverage which side Philippines has to choose??
Who is this four star air force general?
(1) I thought Curtis LeMay was dead?
(2) Seven Days in May? Part Two?
(3) or Dr. Strangelove?
Gotta realize military types like to spread fear to get more money at budget time.
@Michaelm54 Marcos is tied to the US 100%. Being 1/3 the Phils refined fuels supplier will not have any impact on him because the US and allies can take their place. Phils consumption is low impact on the world markets.
@mugteck But I do not understand why because most of the US constituents will not pressure legislators to help some foreign country that is 10,000 miles away except for the ones who think Phils is still part of the US.

Congressmen (& women) with large military suppliers in their constituencies will be more than happy to oblige as will their constituents whose jobs in many cases rely on robust Defence budgets.
@Lotus Eater
Let's not forget that the U.S. was caught with it's pants down in the PI in WWII. Military lobbyists will likely use that as a selling point to emphasize the strategic importance of the PI. If the people who pull the strings want another war, it's likely that they will find a way to make one happen. Sadly, it has always been thus.
@clownbob77
Yes and of course there is a historical context here too. Most non US citizens (and a few that are but should know better) are not aware that The Philippines was America's only colony (Haiti was occupied) so perhaps an emotional angle here. Not to mention the millions of US soldiers who gave their lives fighting the Japs in WW2 to whom we should be grateful.

Yes, of course, but constituents will begin to have a big problem when their very young sons and daughters begin coming home in body bags from some place 10000 miles away that they cannot even find on a map.

.. but they'll find another excuse to up militarisation if the China/Taiwan civil war doesn't turn into a shooting war.
Cash is to be made - WMDs, anyone?

We need a good MAGA anti-war president not held hostage by the defense industry, like Trump or DeSantis, to defuse Ukraine and China, agree @Fred?
Why was my post Not Posted?
Too Truthful for the censors??
I won't continue to be a member on this forum if the apparent Political Correctness censors contine to censor my truthful comments that comply with their "guidelines"... Just because they don't like them.
@PalawOne
U S Generals are immoral, spineless Cucks.
-@Franktexas
That sort of post is a bit pointless as it's just an insult with nothing to back up your opinion.
It's short of substance and intelligence.
@Fred
Oh I DID back up my opinion but the censors here refused to post it.
If you research, there is Plenty of evidence to support my assertion.
You should already know that however, If you were the least bit informed, it seems to be You who is short on substance.

@Enzyte Bob
Ha ha ok, thank you, Bob.
Now I see what's going on here.
If he continues to be an adolescent politicial correctness censor, I won't support this site and will go elsewhere.
There are plenty of other Expat sites that don't censor for political correctness.

Fred is the censor
Censor's should not post opinions, Fred is in Indonesia. . . .never been to the US or Philippines.
@Franktexas wokeness and being Politically correct has now hit the forum go figure obviously they don’t believe in free speech
I also had some posts censored and deleted. Why is someone in Indonesia that has never been to the Philippines or the US in charge of censorship that is outright wrong
Fred isn't "censoring" your posts, lol - the site has moderators for that. But if you read the forum guidelines (hint: sticky at the top), you will note that politics are off limits, as are personal attacks. Those and off topic posts that clog up the threads may be removed. The intention is to keep the discourse civil, informative, and on topic.

In this case the posts were removed for hate speech. Saying you dislike someone or their lifestyle is no big deal, but dumping nasty insults is far from political correctness.

This reply will be under review also.
I believe every dark cloud has a silver lining. If all out nuclear war happens and the human race is reduced to small bands of hunter-gathers, or even wiped out completely, our beloved planet Earth will have a chance to heal.

Not really. Differences of opinion backed up with fair and resonable arguement are no problem. Outright trolling and/or insults are.
None of us are supposed to take part in political discussions but, as long as there are no insults and nastiness, I don't touch them.
I have to admit being naughty as I should not reply to such threads, but education and expantion of the mind can only be achieved by argumentitive discourse backed up by sound research from reliable sources.
I skip quoting the Russian press as a rule. Odd as it is, the US political right tend to love to quote that bunch. Strange as Russia is exceptionally anti-US and does whatever it can to push Russia's version of events, regardless of how true it is.

-@Moon Dog
The mushroom cloud has no silver lining. The earth will not heal; it will be poisoned by radiation with half lives of tens of thousands of years.
