I am in the process of moving from the US.  Getting the NIF online is pretty easy - no need for an attorney.  I worked with an attorney for the D7 and rental contract.  Glad that I did since i dont speak Portugese- the attorney was most helpful.

I am now in my apartment in Portugal and have my SEF apt scheduled for April - worth the cost of a good attorney.

My 2 cents.
