I am planning the big move finally

AlbertaDonuts

Hello from Canada.  Donald here, been a member for years although not so active, more reading and learning from all of you, THANKS MUCH!!!.

I am planning the big move finally, Covid pushed it back by a couple years, but planning to live in the Visayas starting fall 2023.  Long term plan is to buy or lease and own the home, but short term is to rent.  I am single and plan to stay single.  Been there, done that... but never say never.

Moving for the wonderful climate, great diving, fantastic fruit, and yes I love the Filipino Culture.  Not looking forward to the issues around trust and fear that I read too often in this post, I have not experienced that in my past visits.  In December 2022 I carelessly dropped my wallet getting on my scooter on Siquijor Island.  Realized it and came back 30 min later.  An older man saw it and grabbed it.  Held on and waited for me to come back.  The 1500 PHP was still there and more importantly, my Drivers License and Credit Card were also there.  Needless to say I gave him all the money and a big hug.  This is my typical experience in the Phills.

Can't wait to make the big move.  Also looking for good volunteer opportunities where I settle.

Thanks for allowing me into this community, the info is valuable as are the connections.

See you in the Phills soon.

@AlbertaDonuts enjoy Donald... I find also most that most all Filipinos here in Dapitan/Dipolog area are very honest as well... I have only had a bad experience in Manila(taxi driver stole my money)... otherwise has been great... very honest... and yes... the fruits here are awsome!   So much better than my home state of Washington.  Cheers my friend...

Great story and welcome.

My wife and I were buying fruits and vegetables at the local open air market a couple days ago. As I was pulling away in my multicab there was a man in the street flagging us down. When I stopped he handed me a 100 peso bill. My wife had bought something in his shop the day before and he realized he had short changed her.

I'm also in the Visayas and there are plenty of honest people here.

I have one more. When we bought the property I'm living on now I wired around $12K USD to a bank account that we created in my father in law's name. As the banker was counting out stacks of P1,000 notes my mother in law was watching the count. This was in 2008 or 2009 and the province bank didn't have a counting machine at the time. My mother in law was sure there was an extra P1,000 note in the stack and refused to touch the money until it was recounted and sure enough my mother in law was right. That is how they raised their children and that is how they lived their life.
