Beef cost and accommodation

Post new topic

praxiswebcam0r

Hi. I am exploring different countries to retire to and Panama is one. And while everyone raves about the low cost of fruits and vegetables, I am more concerned with the availability of meat from ruminates (cow, lamb etc) and cost, as that's what I eats I would love to get a feed back from the meat eaters among you.

Also, where are the best locations where rent is feasible for someone on limited income from SS and a bit of savings? And if you can recommend accommodations while I explore Panama please let me know.

@praxiswebcam0r La Charrera is known for cattle country just outside of Panama City. The cost of beef I do not know.

Lots of cows here in Chiriqui also, free range, grass fed, not aged so we find the beef flavorful but tough. I've never seen lamb but pork is plentiful. Chicken is the main meat though. We buy free range, delicious chicken from the neighbor for 2/lb.

If you want to keep costs down, avoid Panama City and places full of expats like Coronado, Boquete, etc. Airbnb might be a thing for short term rentals while you explore.

Argentina is famous for their beef. I don't know anything about costs there though.

@kristc99 Thanks for your feedback. The chicken sound great and certainly affordable. However, I don't find it as satisfying and feeling due to it being low in fats. Most are also fed eat grains (soy and corn especially) which raises the Omega 6 contents and it doesn't matter if it's organic. And yes Argentina got excellent beef but isn't very stable. Tougher meat can be tenderized by using a sous vide, slow cooker or pressure cooker but admiringly, I love our American beef.  I looked at a some listings on Airbnb but would rather not use this platform unless there's nothing else; unless for a couple days of stay.

praxiswebcam0r

@Paul Bruner Good to know. And don't start now; more meat for me (:

kristc99

@praxiswebcam0r Yes, I have put beef in the pressure cooker with good results, and some people here cook it with papaya to tenderize it. I almost never eat beef though, occasionally pork, and mostly chicken and fish. I don't know what my neighbor feeds his chickens, but they spend their days running around the yard looking for bugs. They do sell sacks of chicken feed which he probably uses also. It's expensive but you can find imported American beef in the supermarket freezers. We see it here in David so it's probably available in many places.

praxiswebcam0r

@kristc99 Based on the replies so far it's going to present a problem for me as I am sure that imported beef  from the States on other South American countries would probably be expensive. I eat 1.5-2 lb a day and I like the fattest parts and offal. I have been doing these for many years and in superb health and young looking (eating other meats or so called the rainbow (no pun) never worked for me and impaired my health. But now, I can outrun many who are far younger ... The fact that your neighbor chickens row free is a plus. but if he supplements with bought grains, I am certain that the mixture has soy and corn (GMO?). But you do what works for you (: I appreciate the info.

@kristc99 thank you Kristc.

My wife are going to be in Panama in March and would love to meet folks who currently live in different areas. We have been studying Panama for a long time. We have Panama Relocation Tour Guide which is wonderful....still would love to meet and greet if available..

kristc99

@praxiswebcam0r Probably so, especially if you like the fat included. The lowest grade, most fatty hamburger they sell, you almost have to add oil or something to cook it because it is so low fat.

kristc99

@Paul Bruner Sure. Poke me closer to your travel time and we'll see what we can work out. I'm in David. You know March is the most beastly hot month of the summer season.

The only supermarket that I recall having a disclaimer that their beef are not injected in hormones is SuperCarnes. Their prices are reasonable as well.

They have an online shop with prices: supercarnes.com/product-category/carnes-embutidos-y-deli/carnes-de-res/page/1

As far as cheap cost of living, cheaper towns to rent a house would be Penonome, Chitre, or Las Tablas, in my opinion.

praxiswebcam0r

@kristc99 Ouch! There's nothing worth than a dry burger. I like to use ground beef that is 70:30. Unless I can get wagyu ground beef.

praxiswebcam0r

@praxiswebcam0r .

praxiswebcam0r

@kristc99 I meant to say worse (:

kristc99

@praxiswebcam0r No worries. I understood what you meant
