The Carta should show the expiry date. If the Carta was only valid for 5 years it may have expired, but this should not mean you cannot enter Italy. Depending on where you come from, you may need a visa, however. I do not know whether you can renew an expired Carta. You may have to start again?

@nocedizeri It's illimitato is doesn't have an expiration date on it.
