Applying for a D7 visa in the US

Hi!

I'm applying for a D7 visa in the US. I was wondering if anyone can help me with a couple of questions about the requirements for the consulate interview (in the US):

  • Is NIF and having funds in a Portuguese bank account required before coming to Portugal?  Or are they only needed for the SEF interview and applying for the (2 year) residency permit?
  • Is a letter of invitation (termo de responsabilidade) from a friend in Portugal still accepted as proof for accommodations?

Thank you,

Omid

Hi Omid,

The D7 visa is a passive income visa. A NIF and a bank account with a minimum deposit required are mandatory before SEF interview.

The letter of accommodation may be accepted in some cases, but it depends on the nationality of the applicant and the conditions provided by the person offering it. And also who at SEF will be analysing this visa application...

Muito abrigado @JohnnyPT!  Como vai?

I understand that the bank account with a minimum deposit is required before the SEF interview, but is it required at the time of applying for the visa at the consulate, or can it be opened during your 4-month stay in Portugal (before the SEF interview)?  The reason I ask is that VFS Global doesn't include it in its requirements checklist:

I didn't have a four month stay in Portugal.  My SEF appointment was 3 weeks after visa approval.  I wouldn't try to apply for the visa without everything needed.

Olá Omid, estou bem obrigado :)

Here are posts from people who have applied for this visa from US and shared their own experiences:

Thank you for the information @donn25.  Getting the SEF interview 3 weeks after the visa approval is incredible!  From what I've read, in busier cities the interview might even be scheduled for later than the 4-month visa allowance.  If I may ask, in which city did you have your SEF interview?  Did you use a lawyer or went through the process yourself?

Thank you again,

Omid

My appointment was in Coimbra.  I went by myself.
