Federal Retired Employees - Health-Care insurance options

I am planning a retirement in the Philippines and have a couple questions for those that are already there.

I was a federal employee and each year we have an "open season" for health insurance coverage.   I question if any US coverage is worth the price for an expat.

BlueCross/Blue Shield has an international plan which includes services in the Philippines but I have no idea if it is any good.

There may be other providers/plans for federal retiree's but I am not sure what is worth its salt.

Another option is to suspend all coverage but then I would be "self-insured" during that year.

Please if there is anyone who has already been through this, let myself and others know how you addressed healthcare as a federal retired employee.

I have the basic Geha plan and they require you to file a claim and they reimburse you. I just got here so I will accumulate bills and file them.  Bcbs basic the last I looked only paid preferred providers and is over 100 a month more than Geha.  I m going to split my time between pi and the states so I wouldn't suspend.  How would they handle that if you need or want to go back for care if you suspended.

Thank you for the Geha info.  Please let me know if everything goes smoothly. I am sure the Philippines doesn't have the same diagnosis codes that insurance companies tend to want.

If you suspend FEHB, you must wait until the next open season to get any insurance reinstated.   I know that Bluecross/shield pays part of one's medicare if they decide to keep it.   I am not sure about Geha.

Are you medicare eligible?  Did you enroll or give the part B up?

I am also planning on traveling back and forth from the US to the Philippines.  It will take some planning with my mail, medications and upkeep with my home while away.

ANY thoughts and/or feedback appreciated.

Last I checked Geha didn't have any medicare payback, I nor my wife is old enough for Medicare.  Lucky or not our adult kids never left home so they take care of our house while we are gone.  They pay the utilities.  But I pay taxes and insurance.

That is a good deal.  I may just rent (or sell) my house out and hotel it when we come into the US.

I am state Gov retired with medical, been here 8 years and only tried to use it once. (Bluecross) there were so many stipulations that by the time i paid the deductable I only received $25 dollars back from a 30K overnight stay bill...I finally decided i would just cancel starting this January and save a couple hundred here monthly for health care.

My bluecross international plan only paid out if you are admitted through ER, then after you pay out of pocket when discharged you spend a couple of days filing billing receipts, then you pay your deductable and get whats left, so for me it didnt work here...

The answer to which is self insure. Surely (no pun intended) that's the way to go unless you have a legislative government gatekeeper in place. In the UK its called the Financial Ombudsman. In the Philippines you are (as in most scenarios) stuffed - there is no appeal process remedy
